Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Under Floor Wiring

Post by Puggy2 »

So it has happened to me. after 2 years of water problems until I discovered the drain tubes and dried it all out I was surprised in the week by my car loosing 90% of the cabin electrics the only gauge working is the fuel gauge radio died heater control died so I pulled up the front drivers side carpet to discover all the plugs very badly corroded with some pins left in the other side when seperated now the question how far back can these wires be cut back as the corrision has creaped up the wire I cut 1" off and they will not tin ( been solderinhg for 30 years) is it an option to use chocky blockeds.

The wire probably isn't tinning because it's corroded. What if you scrape the copper wires with a knife, will that work? Very not keen on chocky blocks, they corrode too...

I presume the wires can be cut back as far as it takes but you might have to find some more wire to make up the gaps.

Try using scotch brite I find this tends to do the trick. Or cut off as much as is required and splice in extra wiring as required.
PIDG inlines with shrink sleeve over top should work or if you can get your hands on them raychem environmental splices would be the dog's danglies

I was thinking chocky block for more mechanical strength and then wrapping them in self mangenating tape

We use the PIDG crimps on propeller de-ice harnesses and they get spun to over 2500rpm and I've seen plenty of wire failures but never a crimp failure.

That's the $64,000 question, I can probably find the interconnects on Sedre but, presented with a load of wires with probably no visible labels, it's probably not going to help much.

Here's one:

Oh! It's a semi-mux, I must have got my wires crossed somewhere (er..) Oh dear, scratching about in the murky world of semi-mux fuzzy scans :(

I guess it'll still be IC11:

(btw that's full resolution :frown: )

I guess if you can work out which connector(s) we need to look at I can investigate further.

Eh? Do you mean are the looms the same between the cars? They're both semi-mux so probably (I can't be 100% definite even with the RPO's)
