Fuel gauge issue - Goes up but won't come down!

Post by fattail95 »

Hi guys,

Since fitting a new BSI to my 406, the fuel gauge will not go down! When I first installed it, the gauge read 1/4 tank which was correct, however didn't go down. Went to fill up and it took 74 litres, so I nearly ran out! The needle went up to max, however now it wont go down again. Hooked up PP2000 and the fuel quantities are as such:

Gross fuel quantity: 73 litres
Net fuel quantity: 60 litres (after 110 miles of driving, this figure sounds about right)

However, the gauge still does not move! How do I solve this issue as its really annoying me :( I performed the actuator test on the fuel gauge, and it did the full swoop no problem so its not the gauge/stepper motor.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

What does gross and net fuel level mean? Any other ideas? :(

I think one is the instantaneous value based on where the float is at the time, the other is what's sent to the gauge after some digital 'smoothing' so you don't have the level changing when you go round corners or go up & down hills.

UPDATE

Well, the fuel gauge moved! But it moves in chunks, when I went to a friends house the other day, it shifted from 100% to 75%, and has remained there for 150 miles ish, and today after parking on an incline its down to 35% on the gauge, does this mean the sender is sticking? Is it an easy job to replace it?

Thanks!
