Advice sought from like-minded idiots, sorry car enthusiasts

Real life conundrum coming at yah:

This weekend I have to collect Welly_Junior* from University with his many luggage's and many boxes's. THEN I've got to visit FIL too, the combined mileage of which will be about 350miles.

The Problem:

The Volvo's inner CV boot has shat itself and is currently held* in place* with a tie-wrap and a surgical glove (I added the glove yesterday to cover* a gaping hole still evident) . Clearly the more miles I do (and fully loaded) will not be kind to the CV joint and I have no real way of testing how much grease shiz is still left in there. A replacement driveshaft will be many pounds. I can't do the repair yet because I'm waiting for new Dampers in the next two weeks and it'd be daft to dismantle all that stuff twice.

Her_Indoors' car isn't an option because Vauxhall Astra.

So, I was thinking of Hiring a car for the whole weekend and specifically either a Toyoyo Avensis Estate for £94.00 or a Peugeot 5008 for £113.00. The 5008 will be plenty big enough for the luggage stuff and might be nice being 'high up' for a longish trip, the Toyoyo will probably do the job too though I guess. I will save* about £25.00 in fuel costs into the deal.

If I used the Volvo it would cost £60.00 in fuel, hiring the Yoyo would be an additional £70.00 but including the fuel, then a bit more for the Poo-go.

I'm kinda thinking of Hiring and letting something else take the strain? what would you do?

If it was just running about I'd go with whatever has more grunt and chuckability in the bends and drive the bugger like you stole it!
As its a decent jaunt I'd go with comfort which I'm guessing the Pug will probably edge the Toyota on. Driving position would be better assuming we're not in for any strong winds;

Buy a tub of lithium moly grease and cover it in tape. I done 20k with a split CV boot in the Mondeo. I eventually replaced the boot and it's still going fine even still to this day!

I agree with Gumby - hire a car, drive it like you stole it, fill it with treasured* possessions and return it unwashed.....

What would the Vulva cost to drag its sorry CV-unjointed ruins to the nearest Ford* garage..?? Quite a bit more moneh than hiring a decent large car, or a Toyota...

I dunno, I know what you mean about the CV but to me it'd be like running a Marathon with one loose shoe, kinda.

It's a real squeeze in the Volvo with all the lads' Uni gear; Clothes, Bedding, Pots & Pans, Storage Boxes, books, and 4 passengers, we did it before but it wasn't ideal. We've all had a really sh*t few weeks so it might just relieve some tension by using a Hire Car to do the Donkey work. And if I end up with a 5008 you will benefit* from a free review. We'll see what goes.....

Hoonist Johan reckons the 5008 is "not a sporty drive", whatever that means (it won't drift around Sainsbury's car park?) In fact, of all the bad points on the good/bad page (which actually appear to be faults with individual cars, rather than "they all do it so they must be crap" design flaws) this is the one he chose to highlight on the overview. sh*t John, is that all you could find to complain about? It's a Peugeot for god's sake, it must be a mobile disaster area! Don't say it isn't so!

Thanks for the research on my behalf, you can always rely on HJ for some impartial* non-Ford/VW related reviews . So the Avensis will bore us stupid and has a mickey mouse handbrake and the 5008 will be like a squishy lurching old bus, sounds great*.

I'd have to see both cars to make a decision but I think the squishy bus sounds good for a fully-loaded relaxed cruise. The handbag, sorry, brake on the Toyoyo probably just needs getting used to, everything else probably won't affect you and you'll just have to sweep up any parts that fall off of it when you're done.

I had an Avensis rental on one of my work trips a few months back. It was OK, but then again the criteria is that it gets me to where I'm going and back again....
