fuel tank calibration

don't know if this question has been asked Before but how does the gauge measure the fuel in the tank mine gets to completely empty on the gauge but there is still about 15 litres left in the tank, is it possible to calibrate it or do I need to get a new part

i know on the 1.9td the sender in the tank would get full of shite and read poorly, but as you have a hdi 110 you will have a lift pump so i wouldnt recommend this, how do you know you've got that much fuel left?

the fuel tank is 70 litres with a 5 litre reserve, I went down to empty on the gauge and computer then did another 100 miles, and when I filled up i only got 63 litres in
