Strange Driverside (Electric) window behaviour

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Strange Driverside (Electric) window behaviour

Post by HighMiles »

I'm driving a 00 2Ltr Hdi Exec and I have a number of electrical faults, one of which is particularly strange.

To begin, I'll mention that when I turn on the cabin fan/blower, the icon on the display lights up but the motor/fan does not come on (mentioned only in case it's somehow related to the issue below).

When I press the button to lower the drivers door window, it goes down an inch or two and then stops. If I then try to raise it again, nothing happens. If I then press the down button, it goes down by another inch or two and then stops again. Again, if I press the up button, nothing happens but pressing the down button lowers it by another inch or two. This (lowering an inch or two per press) continues all the way until the window is at the bottom position. If I then press the up button, nothing happens as before. No matter what I do, I can't get the window to move up. However, if I wait a while (anywhere between 10 minutes and an hour), all of a sudden the window will roll up no problems. All of the other windows work from this control panel at the time this issue is occurring/apparent.

One other thing I should mention (again, in case it's related), the doors are no longer locking. When I try to lock them from the inside, the switch will not move far enough forward to lock the doors, i.e. it's jammed somehow. I always had problems with the lock on this door in so far as the lock often felt like it was rotating inside in the door and took a steady hand to lock from the outside. This has since jammed completely and does not move at all when attempting to turn the key (the central locking worked from the inside for a while after this happened).

Any guidance or insight on these issues (especially the window) would be greatly appreciated.

For the heater blower first thing to check is the fuse (its in the engine bay)

Have you tried lubricating the window runners?

For most strange electrical gremlins its an idea to check the wiring in the passenger foot well under the carpet isn't wet, but yours don't quite sound strange enough!

I don't think it's the window runners as there is literally no activity when I rock the switch back to the up position, i.e. I can't even hear the switch tripping the way you would when you press the switch forward to the down position when the windows is bottomed out. Also, when it eventually works again (10min - 2hrs later) the window goes up without issue. I'll check the wiring in the passenger foot-well though. I haven't noticed any moisture or dampness inside but is there any thing else/in particular I should look for while I'm down there?

I'm getting the same sort of issue with my drivers electric window.

Switch seems to be reversed, then it goes down by small increments and up by small increments (in reverse order to what switch does on all other three windows)

I hear this can be just the switch as water can get in there. All other 3 electric windows are fine. Anyone any experience of this? How much would a new switch be from the main dealer? Are they still available?

Failing that, could it be the regulator? I had the window down when changing the battery.

Hi

With regard to this repair, would you need to disconnect the battery before removal of the part? I'm planning on taking this part inside to do the fix as per the video (locking the car)

Thanks

If you have disconnected the battery with the window down or just a little up or down bsi needs resetting, lower the window as it does in steps, when it reaches bottom hold the switch on down for ten seconds, its normally about ten seconds, if you listen really carefully you will a little click that's the bsi reading the window is down, put window up let go of switch then hold up again for ten seconds this should reset the bsi
If it doesn't fit you need a bigger hammer
