Hi,
Our '02 2.0 HDI was having trouble starting ever since we purchased it back in May of this year (it would crank about 4 times before fully starting - our previous 406 would start on the first crank). One day it just wouldn't start. We had a neighbor jump start it and we drove off. The next morning it wouldn't start again. I tried to jump it with a friends car - no luck. We called breakdown and they tried to start it - no luck. We had it towed to our local garage and they told us when they hooked up their diagnostics tool to our BSI it got no reading at all, and the starting motor smoked. They replaced the starting motor with one from our previous 406 (still at the garage!!!) and it turned over fine - but now the electronics systems don't work and they said we need a new ECU / BSI kit...
I'm at a loss to know what to do - I thought I was pretty ignorant about cars and now this really seems over my head... The local garage team said that we need to make sure that we get a replacement that is from the same vehicle because they're coded together with the key (I've now read about that and that makes sense) and that the Bosch number on the ECU matches our ECU and that the Valeo number on the BSI matches our BSI...
Is that true - do the numbers need to match exactly? One of the breakers we spoke said the only thing that mattered was that the kit came from the same vehicle - if the numbers didn't match exactly the ones we had in our car it would still work... That sounded suspicious - our GLX has all the fancy electric seats and windows and the rest - if it's a different BSI then it shouldn't work - should it?
Help! I'm swamped and don't have money to spend on parts that don't work and I've been without this car for a week already and don't have more time to spend sorting it out...
Thanks for any tips... Cheers.
