Sat nav recommendations
Hi,
My mother wants a new Sat Nav* for her frequent* travels. Can someone recommend a decent, recent (preferably new but will take an older one) navigator that is mom-proof? Easy to use, she doesn't need any fancy mobile connectivity/Yellowtooth malarkey but I guess traffic updates would be a bonus.
Cheers

Re: Sat nav recommendations
Is it an RT4 system? Probably the same as in my 407 - no touchscreen, no full post-code capability... and likes to send you through town centres and country lanes because it deems those routes "faster".

Re: Sat nav recommendations
I don't know but it sounds familiar, inputting postcodes is like a guessing game where you eliminate all other possibilities until you get to yours. It's been the source of some quite interesting discussions* in the car.
When I aimed the car at that Portsmouth I told the twat to take us the 'shortest' route. Using the Newbury bypass it began taking us off there and through the (bypassed) towns
it took ages to figure out it was only doing what I'd told it too. Her_Indoors kept seeing the same mini-bus on the bypass; I must've over-taken it 4 times
Worst case was when travelling through Woburn Safari Park; the satnav proudly exclaimed "Bear Left" and when I looked there was just a Lion asleep.
Be-dum....Tschhh

Re: Sat nav recommendations
The postcode thing works* really well* in Croatia, where postcodes cover whole areas of the country. Input postcode: f*ck me, there's hundreds. Ok, put the road in: there are 10 and none of them have the right postcode
What's that saying? Rubbish in : rubbish out.
When we went to the UK a few years back my bro sent me his Tomtom which really impressed me, I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to tech these days but it was a piece of piss to work, here to there, no muss no fuss. When I bought my own I went for a Garmin as they're the only big sat nav co in Croatia and I didn't want warrenty issues or anything. We call it the Random Direction Generator. I don't have anything enabled on it but it just sends us on the occasional detour¸for no readily apparent reason. When we took Charlie to the vet's in Zagreb last week I programmed the address into it (or as close as I could) and it got us to Zagreb ok (I could've done that myself) but then tried to send us in a completely different direction. Nothing to do with shortest route or anything, just wrong. If we hadn't had a fairly good idea where we were going I dread to think where we would've ended up.

Thing's useless - it keeps telling me to "Pull Up" and there's obviously nowhere to park.

Re: Sat nav recommendations
First one was about 6 or seven years old(could have been older) when I replaced it......and I dropped the second one and broke the screen
It still switches on but the touchscreen doesn't function properly. I use it everyday at work from 7am till about 5pm. I let it follow me around warning me of speed cameras etc.

Re: Sat nav recommendations
I've got a 2012 vintage TomTom Start 60, (6" screen aka FatNav), with this summer's Western Europe map update.
It's pretty good and really easy to use, (& see without reading glasses).

I have a mobile phone with a 5 1/2 inch screen and google maps works fine
If it doesn't fit you need a bigger hammer

Re: Sat nav recommendations
A few years ago, being quite skint, I earned some money from buying and selling sat-navs.
Lots of different makes and systems.
I found the most straightforward to use were the Garmins.
