Pug 406 diesel project. Need advice!!!

Post by TwinkleToes »

Hello! My name is Adrian, and i intend to start a project for my new future daily car. I've set my eyes on XUD9 [i drive a lot ~25k/year , i'm a student with not a lot of money :( so i want a wvo capable engine  ) ]. After a bit of documentations i'm set on 406. The main problem is xud9 came in D8 body only, and i hate d8's styling (ugly rear end, ugly interior ,limited toys like no climate control, sunroof, heated seats etc).
I want my car to look like this : Image

with this interior :

or this interior

Basically i want a D9 with a xud9 turbo engine 8) .So to make this happen i have 2 options :
1). Buy a D8 with a xud9 turbo and facelift it(exterior and interior , gadgets like climate control electric seats, windows etc),then paint it to my preferred color
2). Buy a wrecked D8 with a good xud9 engine ,buy another d9 whith the specs and color i want , and make the transplant (the legislation in my country won't allow an older engine swap into a registered car unless i perfom an engine swap from an regitered damaged car to a newer chassis)
I'm willing to spend some money into this project if at the end i will finally have the car i want.
The technical issues im confronting are?
Is it posible to swap a xud9 into a d9 2003-2004 body? what components do i need except the engine? (will a 6sp manual from a dw10/dw11 fit xud9?)
How hard and feasible is to facelif a d8 to d9? body (front i know it can be done but the rear tail lights from d9 i heard won't fit into d8 rear panel), interior (seats, dashbord, door panel. airbags, other electrics etc) and gadgets like climate control ?????
Thanks for your patience and answers !!

Hi Adsrian, sorry for the delay (bit quiet on here these days...)

I didn't know about the tail lights, only having had estates, so I kind of left the reply for someone who did (and then kind of forgot  ) but I think they're a direct fit.

There's not a lot of difference tbh. You can swap between but you'll need to modify the rear bench and adapt the wiring got the switches (both in the how to's)
TwinkleToes wrote:limited toys like no climate control, sunroof, heated seats etc).
Did you do any research? All were available in the D8, depending on trim level etc.

Both coupe's I think. The dash is the same and I think the seats go (obviously not the bench or door cards) but I don't think you'll find white dials to fit a D8.

Almost everything will fit but how you proceed will depend on what you can get hold of. You don't mention your location, it would be easy in the UK but I suspect you're not.

The hardest thing to transplant is probably the climate.

D9 front end on a D8 - you will need:
Bonnet, grille, bumper, headlights, slam panel with bonnet release (D8s have 2, D9s have 1) . Wings will fit but the only difference is the indicator repeater location.

To be honest it's all possible but it'll depend on what's available to you/how much money you have to spend (I've even seen Lucas injection added to a DW10.) D9s obviously have the dreaded body control BSI so you'd basically have to rewire a D9 with wiring from a D8 or the BSI would give you a very bad day.

Dammit, the forum stripped the pictures out :frown: I'm sure you'll get the idea.

Thanks! I really appreciate your help. In the last couple of days i've done quite some research on 406's but my knowledge is still lacking, plus i'm no mechanic. I'm from Romania and most of the 406's here are d9 hdi. It's really hard actually to even find a d8 in acceptable condition, and the ones you can find are the basic equipped ones.
I'm tempted to swap a xud9 into a D9 body , maybe something pre-mux 99-2000.

The red leather interior i know it's form the coupe. I can take a black leather sedan interior and respray it :cheesy:
The partial lether interior in the image is from a 2004 ST sedan. I actually prefer the partial leather ,here in the summer it's really hot ,plus it looks sportier.
My plan (actually one of them) is to buy a D9 ST/SV 2.2HDI 6 speed manual with the partial leather sport interior and swap in a XUD9. I'm planning to keep the 6speed manual if it's compatible with xud9 (i do a lot of motorway). The xud9 wil have a bosch 9mm pump and injectors with a T2 turbo (hope to make 130hp  )with a custom curve map (i actually want torque not hp  )

Sadly no 406 left the factory with a 6 speed gearbox.

I don't believe any 406 was built with a 6-speed box, (mine is from a 2004 Citroen C5). With this gearbox/final drive ratio, (35 mph/56 kph per 1000 RPM), an XUD would struggle to use top gear except down hill. It suits mine perfectly, but it has about 180 bhp/420 Nm.

In the UK, you could buy a D8 executive with leather trim - at least in saloon form - with either a 1.9 XUD + Bosch fuel system, or 2.1 XUD with a Lucas system. I think that's the nearest to what you're looking for. Making a D9 work with an XUD engine would require virtually the entire electrical system from the older car - their comms and control architectures are completely different.

Oh, and a belated welcome BTW. 8)
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Over here that project would not be worth the time & effort not to mention money
I don't know much about Romania fuel prices but I would hazard a guess that the money you would plough
Into this project would run a 110 hdi for a year at 50-60 mpg's with out all the effort & hard work
+ 145bhp can be had very easily :cheesy:
2002 110 HDi estate, Rapier in monaco blue! ( found quite a bit more power :cheesy: ) SOLD I've sorted the airbag light :cheesy:
1998 3.0 V6 SE coupe in Diablo Red ( my baby ) sold
2006 206 1.4 16v sport in Aegean blue ( wife's shopping trolley  )

2006 BMW e61 535d m-sport :supafrisk: run's for cover

Thank you guys for your help.
I was under the impression that dw12 It came from factory with a 6 spead manual, my bad! My job involves traveling around the country a lot plus my vacations and the commute from home to college(~25-30k/year) that's easily 2500 euros/year on fuel alone with my parents car( ford mondeo 2.0tdci). And i need to buy a car for me anyway because my parants had enough of repair bills while their car was used by me.
So i can buy a newer car and spend a lot of money on fuel and repair bills or buy a xud9 and save some money ( I have friends and acquaintances who own restaurants so no problem in getting used oil)

Plus xud9 doesn't have that many electronics (partial electronic pump, some sensor and don't know much else :( ) .I really need to read more about xud9 system management -ECU and other electronics crap. I guess if you swap a xud9 you need replace the ECU too, so here lies the problem

Buy a D8, they still look really smart with good paint and nice wheels - and enjoy it as it is... :cheesy:

D9 are a nice car ( I've had 3.. ) but in your position I would stick with the D8 , you can still have the half leather interior from a late model with minimal effort, plus you have less electrical problems.

Welcome, by the way.

I can't see why not but you'll need a lot of car parts and I've always been told it's a bastard of a job.

There's no problem with you asking questions (as long as they're not too silly  )

Are you looking for cars on-line? You could post links for us to marvel at.
