Does a strut brace really make any noticable difference? Or is it mainly just a cosmetic thing

Apparently it does make a difference, not sure if it is noticable though. I read somewhere that it strengthens the wings of the car and helps substantially reduce tyre wear when cornering.
Anyone else know?
