Pug 2.2 HDI 16v Cambelt

Hi All,

I have a 2002 Pug 406 2.2 HDI 16v DW12. It is coming up for 144k on the clock and am thinking about changing the cambelt myself, looked at Haynes bible and looks like a huge job with exhaust dismantles and various huge operations but I am still not put off and enjoy a challenge and will enjoy the obvious learning experiance. Is there any advice you could give me before I head to the spanners, i.e special tools or step by steps, and even advice on what else should be replaced why I have half the car in bits, would love to run this car well into the 300k mark so want to do a good job.

best to change the timing chain and timing chain tensioner too as these often throw a wobbly before the cambelt snaps, ive never done a 16v HDi belt before, but i know its a right pig

Thanks for the quick response, would the chain have been replaced before and if not what is the life span of one of these, and have you any experiance of changing these.

never changed one my self, though i do know they are very prone to letting go without warning, and they end up doing some pretty awful damage

Forgive my ignorance, but I thought cambelts and timing chains were essentially the same thing so you wouldn't get both in the same engine?

Or is there some layout like the cambelt just driving one camshaft with a chain connecting the other? I guess that would help to keep the belt short leaving less for it to stretch...

I believe the 16v has a cam belt that drives one of the cams, the over is driven via cam chain from the first one.

yep this is true, the cambelt drives the exhaust camshaft, with a chain at the gearbox end linking the two together
