hi - haynes still not arrived. grrrr....
looking over things today; the alloy manifold at the "top" (bulkhead side) of the engine has a gasket and fitting at its right hand/passenger side end. I guess this is the entrance from the intercooler. Black oily blow at the top - not sure how old (I've wiped it and will monitor) - can this be cured just by just doing gasket or do I need the help of an adult/do I need to check/replace other parts?!

Since yours is a 90BHP you don't have an intercooler. It sounds like the charge pipe from the turbo to the inlet manifold. The turbo will send oil with the air stream under normal use and this sounds like the oil is weeping out from somewhere.
Why not show a couple of pics for us to see?
You could also take off the pipe and if it's oily inside then this is where it's coming from and is quite normal. I have the intercooler and that gets quite a lot of oil built up in the pipes from the turbo itself.

its normal that you get a build up of oil inside the boost pipes. the breather system is closed (sealed to the outside air), so it will breathe its own oil vapour.
diesels can and have been known to run on their oil (ask any renault laguna dci owner!) but with the hdi its very uncommon for it to happen. if you are still worried about it, whip the inlet pipe off the compressor side of the turbo and check the end float in the turbo. it should have a minute amount of play in the shaft.
