Sump plugs...why 2?

Post by ed209 »

Why are there 2 sump plugs (d8 diesel), 1 on the bottom of the sump ( which on my car, refuses to budge) and the other on the fromt face of the sump, halfway up!
I call her Starbug 1, because she's green with intergalactic milage!! I do love my D8 diesel.

They aren't the only ones!

How about a level check hole? Like when you fill a gearbox, fill it until it comes out of the fill hole and robert is your father's brother. Although I always fill the oil using volume measurement and checking with the dipstick.

The one on the side is probably for a low oil level light (had them on the BXs) edit or a temperature sender. As these things are generic across the group, it's probably the same sump with just a bung in it.

Good luck with the plug! I seem to remember seeing some garages use a pump to empty sumps via the dipstick tube, this might be a better (though far from ideal) alternative to potentially trashing your sump.

Does that mean I have a Friday afternoon sump? :P

Any tips for removing a stuck plug, without knackering it? (wishful thinking :| )

I don't think think there are any tips, if it really is cross-thredded then you have to be prepared in case the thread in the sump strips - it probably could be helicoiled but I'd reckon you'd still need to take the sump off 'cos cutting the thread will make lots of lovely swarf.

Breakers probably won't be much help either, unless you can find someone with a blown up lump.

Or find someone with one of those oil suckers - Hey, look!

just for your info if you go down the route of a new sump then you will be looking at £50.00 from a motor factor and 28 allen key bolts after removing both the alternator and power stearing pump and bracket and about 2 1/2 hours work to do it....

i know cos i had to change mine as it rusted through ....changed it in june
