406 hdi gearbox info needed

Post by robconnors1977 »

Forstly car concerned is 2001 Y reg hdi 90

My gearbox has just started making strange noises!!
My question is i am trying to locate a 2nd hand one, but what type of box is fitted? - also can i use the same box from a 110 bhp or one of the petrol varients. All i know is my gearbox is hydraulic and is not the dmf type!

your gearbox is a BE4/5, but there are many variants, you need a HDi box as the ratios will be wrong otherwise, what strange noises is it making?

2nd hand box from a scrapyard/ebay £100-£150.

Reconditioned boxes 6mths guarantee ebay £400.

I assume it would be a Hydrolic box like mine?

If the car has done lots of miles if ur changing the box you might as well do the Clutch.

well in the last two months it has intermittantly started making a graunching rotational sound when you go above 2000 revs. Noise goes if you dip clutch. I have no bearing noises or problems with changing gear. I do however have problems with clutches juddering after 40k, but i put this down to the flywheel.

It is a strange noise but two garages have put it down to the box but even they admit its a weird noise and also the fact it comes and goes!!

You said that the noise goes when you depresss the clutch?

If the car is still rolling at the time in gear, then the gearbox is still turning, and you might expect the noise to still be there.

Based on what you said about the clutch slipping, I would think it more likely to be a clutch or flywheel issue. (I know on th 110's that the dual mass flywheel can be a problem)

Good Luck

It might be the difference between load/overrun and no load at all. Sounds like input shaft bearing to me but I've not played with gearboxes since everything was RWD.

sounds more like the clutch release bearing or the spigot bearing

it does seem a lot harder to reproduce the fault when the car has no load - ie when driving the car on the ramp it is almost impossible to produce the fault.

It can be sometimes possible to reproduce the fault if you are moving along dip the clutch and rev it past 2000 rpm you can still hear it slightly.

It is weird and i do personally find it hard to belive its the box as it all still selects fine, the noise sounds very much like an exhaust resonation against the bulk head but it is def a rotational sound that gets mre rotational the quicker you go, but its not a grinding gearbox bearing noise or a whir. Its very odd.

I think the only way i am going to be able to see what has failed is by driving it till either the box or clutch goes!!

It's not common to have gearbox issues on a 406. Even if you neglect changing the box's oil it won't punish you for it.

I say it will be something else here.

Differential bearings can wear at monster mileages accompanied by a distinct vibration under acceleration.

I wouldn't dismiss cambelt/tensioner/idler/aux belt either :|

Even the rear engine mount can transmit nasty noises - have you checked that? it would be a cheap and not a waste of money elimination to try anyway.

they lie
be3/4 doesnt exist, be is the type of bell housing, 3 is the version of the box and the last digit is the number of forward gears, and there never was a four speed be box :?

Mine's started making some very nasty noises like that, over 2-3000rpm in 2nd (not been faster recently) and most worryingly when pulling off in 1st (although not when doing a 2nd gear start for some reason!)

My first thought was the clutch, but it's definitely not slipping and it happens when completely in gear too. However I can feel the vibrations on the clutch pedal. Any ideas?

the clutch setup on the 406 means it will more or less never slip, unless of course the friction plate disintigrates
it sounds like you have a mullerd engine mounting or two, which isnt supprising at your mileage

Hmm I was thinking along those lines... How can I check before handing over cash?

open the bonnet and get a friend to put the hand brake on and try and pull away untill the point where the car is almost stalling, the engine will move a hell of a lot, so you can then have a look arround under the bonnet at which mounting is moving the most
do you get a nasty annoying vibration arround 2200rpm?
