Rear towing eye

Post by mjb »

My tubby and V6 both have a towing eye that's too big for the rear hole, yet fits perfectly in the front! Is this a standard thing? Has anyone actually managed to screw the towing eye into the rear of their '6?

I ended up hammering it in HARD and screwing it in using a breaker bar. Got to the breakers yard (bye bye tubby - when i go back tomorrow with the sodding logbook  ) and coaxed it out to discover that I'd towed the tubby 5 miles with the towing eye held in by less than one circumference of thread!

It does seem to me that the non-threaded part of the eye is about 1mm too big in diameter... Anyone got a lathe and want to make a few quid from 406 owners?

Once towed a 2 tonne 1963 Land Rover with mine, sharp corner uphill actually bent the eye  . I get the impression that the eye used to fit better when new, maybe it's years of muck thrown up inside the bumper that does it. Could try running a tap through the socket :? Anyone know what thread it is?

The problem isn't the thread - it's the unthreaded bit between the thread and the eye that's too big for the rear mount's hole... Stick an eye in a lathe and take 1mm off that unthreaded bit and it'll probably fit perfectly :/
