How to tell the 210bhp v6 from the 197 bhp?
Anyone know?
As I've mentioned am looking at getting a v6 coupe. I'd like the 210 version (of course, more power and mpg) but i am not sure at what point it was brought in or how to tell the difference from the 197bhp.
The internet seem to say the 210 came in some time in 2000 but I though it might have come in with the d9's (e.g T reg). I've spotted that the road tax for anything 2001 or later (Y reg) is going to be *£400+ in a year or two so that has ruled out quite a few cars. If the 210 is only after 2000 that'll limit me to the w/x reg if i want the 210!
*[rant] It pisses me off its ok for me to drive 35k a year in my HDi for ~£200, but if i want to drive 5k to 8k in a 3.0 v6 i have to pay over £400! Which is "worse" for the environment.....[/rant]

Re: How to tell the 210bhp v6 from the 197 bhp?
I myself owned a 406 3.0 V6 se coupe Around 5 years ago. I think the 210bhp came in on the fecelift models i agee with you there so i would imagine t reg onwards. Personllay very overated car having owned the car for 3 years it was such a let down wish i never bothered buying it
. Dont get me wrong styling to die for and the interior was gorgeous full leather and the spec excellent. Should of listened to mate and got bmw 330ci clubsport
If you just intend to look at the car great but driving a big dissapoiniment. Please bare in mind this is someone who has owned lots of peugeots and likes them v much. If i was buying a 406 the saloon is far better in everyway. If its V6 power you are after go for the 406 saloon better handling than the coupe plus cheaper insurance. Have to say though it will drink the fuel even if you take it easy. My hdi returns doule the mpg.

Looking at the engine the 197bhp beast has a V6 badge on the right of the engine cover with 3 diagonal slashes to the left of the badge the 210bhp has a V6 badge in the middle of the cover.mbell666 wrote: I'd like the 210 version (of course, more power and mpg) but i am not sure at what point it was brought in or how to tell the difference from the 197bhp.

thanks for the replies, I've found this which shows the differences in engine covers:
http://www.peugeot406coupe.com/phpBB2/v ... hp?t=11959
Everything seem to point to the 210 coming some time in 2000 not with the face lift version thou.
rapport25: What was it about the handling of the coupe you didn't like? I currently have hdi saloon and i like the handling but would have thought the coupe would have been as good if not a little better. Was it anything else apart the handling that it let you down on? I don't think i could replace the it with another saloon.
My lifestyle has changed alot of the last couple of months and I am now in a position where the car is basically a "toy" and isn't crucial to everyday life. Therefore it needs to be something to be enjoyed, i.e. good looking, fast and fun to drive.
I expect the v6 to drink fuel but given the amount i've spent on repairs i expect the real running costs per mile not to be actually that different to my hdi. Also the v6 is meant to be one of the more reliable engines (e.g. no dmf rubbish)!
I am looking at the coupe because there are good looking and very good spec (struggle to match it with anything else) as well as being pretty fast with the v6. Also as i've own a 406 for nearly 3 year i have a good idea at what i am looking at.
I've not got a lot a money so something like a BMW coupe is out of the question (not a big BMW fan anyway). The other car i've been considering as a honda prelude 2.2 motegi (198bhp vtec
), but these are very rare, much lower spec and probably out of my price range.

Easy. Just look at a few ebay ads.mbell666 wrote:Anyone know?
Everything I've seen says the older version accelerates quicker than the 210 and has the same economy. It just loses a couple of mph at the very top end.I'd like the 210 version (of course, more power and mpg)

Re: How to tell the 210bhp v6 from the 197 bhp?
hmmm the published figures show the 210 a couple of mpg in front and maybe 1/10 of a sec. but there again theres nothing saying those figures are accurate.
should just concentrate on finding a good tidy (pre 2001) one. the performance of 197bhp v 210 will probably be unnoticeable to me coming from a 110 hdi! Both of them will be one hell of a shock at the petrol station!

Yeah every result in a google search appears to be slightly different. In fact nobody seems to even know the power of the car in bhp either (the manual states 192hp but not the engine's bhp output)mbell666 wrote:hmmm the published figures show the 210 a couple of mpg in front and maybe 1/10 of a sec. but there again theres nothing saying those figures are accurate.
My trip counter says 274 miles. The fuel gauge shows under 1/4. I brimmed the tank and reset the trip counter at the same time. OuchBoth of them will be one hell of a shock at the petrol station!
Mind you, it has spent a considerable amount of time in the upper half of the rev counter ;)

You must be enjoying the car! Thats pretty heavy on fuel, I'd expect to put in over £60 from a 1/4 tank! Probably get 700 miles out of my present car on thatmjb wrote:

I'd expect most of my driving will be longer runs so should hopefully get somewhere near [enter_dream_mode] 30mpg [leave_dream_mode].

250 of that was motorway runs... Well, autobahn obviously ;)
On a completely unrelated note, did you know the V6 can do indicated 120mph in 4th and will go well past the last speedo mark in 5th?
Also if you were a policeman with legal authority to do those kinds of speeds, you'd discover the M6 toll road is very very twisty with lots of sharp bends that you really need to slow down for. Just random trivia...

Yeah, right...mjb wrote:Also if you were a policeman with legal authority to do those kinds of speeds, you'd discover the M6 toll road is very very twisty with lots of sharp bends that you really need to slow down for.

There's a seemingly inoccuous bend on the A10 just by Broxbourne that revealed itself to be a nasty sharp right-hander at an indicated 148mph. Once I was above the law...

Re: How to tell the 210bhp v6 from the 197 bhp?
I agree about the bmw's not a fan myself but hold there money far better than the pugs. I had never owned a 406 in any shape or form. Heart was set on a 406 coupe V6 Se. Which i purchased from a dealer as an ex demo model not saying what i paid and sold it for
3 years later. All what i expected the coupe to be it wasn't when you buy a car costing nearly 30k new you would expect it to be superior in lots of ways but it wasn't at all even to a 18k car well so i thought. I know a 406 coupe is grand tourer and not a hot hatch. But the handling is the worst i have experienced in along time reading the spec upper and lower strut braces you would imagine excellent handling but its very shocking how bad it grips. When turning in to a bend it wollows all over the road forget pressing on into a bend it wont let you. Thinking back had a few problems with the gearbox was told the problem was the gearbox was not upto the job. A few electrical problems. And that was it really. Sold car and purchased a saloon hdi did not expect how good the handling was. At the point where i can drive my saloon 20 30mph faster in bend compared to the coupe. And i dont mean driving it had either.Basically you will have a gorgeous looking car shame about the drive. Oh yes the V6 what an engine. The coupe what a let down.

Re: How to tell the 210bhp v6 from the 197 bhp?
thanks for the feedback.
I am looking for more off a grand tourer than an out and out sports car. I'll either be round local or doing long distances in it.
I think my expectation for the car will be slightly lower as i'll be spending alot less, but your comments are food for thought (or the test drive!). I should be in a good place to compare its handling to the saloon thou.

I'm only half way through the computer. Need to:
1. fix the bad connection on the button (sh*t maplins scotch-locks)
2. add wires 13 and 14 on the original computer connector, cut the fuel gauge wire and solder the computer in-line
3. Find a way through the bulkhead
4. Find 1368 (can't get near the wires on the ecu plug on this one, so might have to take the battery out)
