Sad Day Indeed :(

Post by GeordieBoy »

Even tho my 406 had a few problems, I still loved it espec the comfort, but it had to go in the end.
I Part Ex'd it plus £150 for a 1998 R reg Vectra SRi 2.5 v6 Saloon 84k miles today.
It seemed a good deal, as some of you know it might have needed a new gearbox, both abs wires
were cut after being caught on the wheel and airbag light was always on.

I have no doubt I will eventually get another 406/407.

See you all around someday again, I'll pop in from time to time tho.

Should have got a V6 406 - 2.5 litres is the best part of a pint short of a real engine :P
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Is the SRI the one with the handbuilt engine? Or was that the later 2.5?

Congrats on the purchase!

Cheers everyone, I'm loving the noise it makes. Its got a few issues I'm looking at sorting out, nothing as expensive as sorting the 406 would have been tho.
The fuel bill on a 2.5 v6 is bad enough, I'm getting 20mpg if I drive sensibly ish.

The Vectra is for sale as I bought a BMW E36 328i instead. Any car is built better than the french cars tbh.

Just ask CJ

(although admitteldy there's a big difference between how a car's put together and how reliable it is, my dad's old Merc - E124 300TE 4matic - was amazingly well put together but it didn't stop it spitting out core plugs or the gearbox from self distructing just after he flogged it, haha)

The 4matic was notorious for shitting boxes! 24v for blowing head gaskets - the one to get is the 12v 300e with the 4 speed auto!

Anything 4cyl in a W124 is painfully slow :P

You can. Mercs are not as solid as they should be, neither are BMWs. VWs tend to break down a lot these days too. (I know a few owners).

Each manufacturer has its weakpoints on build quality. Pugs might not have the best electrics.. but the 406 was put together quite solidly.
When an Audio owner gets into your 9 year old 406 and after 20 miles of sitting in the passenger seat, and fiddling with the center dash, says its built better and has more toys than his 15 month old Audi TT... you can't knock that.

I see you're getting quicker and quicker motahs..
Your reasoning each time is better build quality. How about it just being plain and simple willy waving?
You don't go from OIl Burner 406 to a Poxhaul Vectra 2.5 ABCDEFG to a 2.8 litre BMW, with the cars getting older each time just on build quality

lol not at all, I got a Vectra v6 cos thats the deal I was given for a trade in on the 406. I wasn't perticulary after a Vectra v6, I just wanted rid of the 406.
The BMW was a mates for the last 16mths, it has full bmw service history, I'm friends with the local garage owners who have looked after the car. We both
went camping in the lakes, I averaged 25mpg in the v6, the BMW got 35mpg, around town driving I get 20mpg the BMW gets 25mpg. So when the BMW
was up for sale I bought it, as it made financial sense and of course its quicker and RWD. Older cars were built to last, when I was on the Barcelona Banger Rally in July someone had an old H reg 535, it got hit at 80mph from behind by a Merc, spun round and went into the central reservation, remarkable the car was still able to continue, quite a bit dented but everyone was ok. BMW are made from proper metal.
