Massive compressed air blast noise on boost

What a great weekend, not.

Was driving on Saturday and could hear horrible sound on accelerating, opened the window to hear a HUGE really loud blast like a compressed air line every time it came on boost.

Still drives ok and still boosting (and inflating the hoses) but it sounds so bad, even people in the street are turning around to look at me

All the reachable hose connections are good and the intercooler is ok so it must be coming from the (very oily) hose at the turbo itself looks like my ignoring of the turbo oil leak has finally bitten back

So, let's recap.....

Turbo hose..££££ dunno 150.00? fitted
A/c condenser £300.00
2 x front tyres (yes still not done this) £150.00
Crying out for full brake service (not touched the brakes at all yet) £150.00
Rear sussy really bad £175.00

= £925.00

Time to put the "disposable car" theory into practice? Then again, if you fix all that you won't have anything else wrong with it (for now), better than a complete unknown as we head into winter.

I saw a mint N reg D8 in Silver yesterday and immediately I had mjb's voice ringing inside my head saying "D9's are rubbish....should've bought a cheap D8" etc etc.

Think I'll have to fix the air leak and tyres first oh and I forgot it's not had an oil change for 12 months now too then the brakes then see what the MOT man has to say abut the sussy in January and I think we'll have to leave the a/c forever

Maybe it'll become more obvious when it's up on a lift. Tyres you can put on another car (you want to enjoy winter with a couple of Yul Brinners on the front?), hopefully the brake service won't be anything more than pads, or maybe copperslipping pins (don't bother with new ones or anything, unless you're feeling rich), do they do engine oil in Lidl there? I'd worry about the a/c though, condensation+BSI=one arm+both kidneys. You could always strip the condenser out and flog it if the car goes bang.

You want to hear it though steve I didn't think it was capable of producing so much air me and my lad were "getting" passers by with it I think people were expecting a tricked out Supra to storm past not a Diesel 406

Maybe not for months, maybe give it two weeks - time to strip what you want, few odds and sods for the people on here then call for the man with the low loader.

Or you could always play "make a D8 look like a D9" with it

Can you rev diesels from the engine bay? If not get someone to boot the pedal while you're bent over trying to find out where it's actually leaking.

If it's somewhere like the flexible hose to the intercooler you could always grab a bike puncture repair kit, then tape it up with 3/4 of a roll of duct tape ;)

As for the brakes, they're easy enough to do yourself, especially if discs (especially rear!) aren't needed

You can rev the HDi by yanking on the throttle pot but I can't reproduce the load it needs, unless (thinking about it) the engine twists on it's knackered lower mount (another job pending) and effectively 'opens' the split hose.

Brake wise I need new discs up front and pads all round, the rears will want freeing off as the pistons will be right out on the low pads. I don't have the tools, the inclination, a decent back needed to do it

Oh and NEVER offer an inquisitive hand upto the open intake manifold pipe of an idling HDi, just don't

fook me welly u aint having much luck at the moment with her are you . if it was my car and gonna cost me over £900 to put right it would be up the mountain making a nice bonfire about now ( im starting to think about it with my discovery and that only needs about £300 spending on her ) . just think of the d8 you could buy with the insurance pay out

Sorry, but i need my pug to ultra reliable as i use it daily. I would never have let it get to the stage yours is welly.

Which surprises me when you had posted some pics of it I always believe in looking after your car and finally mine is paying off

Never heard of preventitatitative maintenance? (And today I was mostly looking at the disaster of my D8's back brakes, feeling sad, chucking loads of copper slip everywhere and putting it back together before I got too depressed)

Btw did you get underneath it yet?

My car is mint cosmetically but my wallet is not mint(ed) so I've done oil and filters only. The brakes aren't on the wear indicators yet, and the tyres aren't on the wear bars yet, the engine mount is torn but useable (as is most of ours if anyone bothers to look at them), the condenser is not my fault and I didn't consider that an oil weep on the turbo would lead to a hose spliting/blowing, the sussy was an advisory in January but not dangerous.

I have left a few jobs to stack up but no more than any other everyday motorist (you know, the ones who wait for a loud noise or a light to come on)

TBH rappy I've spent years spending an absolute fortune on (mostly) fanatical, largely unnecessary repairs on seemingly pucka Petrol/Sports models and I said when I bought this Diesel that I would stop all that and just use the thing. I've always spent a fortune on maintenance and spent far too much effort focussing on a "slight noise", or a "slight knock" untill it was all fixed and it never got me anywhere other than into debt and a car worth only fractionally more than its scruffy counterpart down the road

Not having a go rappy as I like you a lot but I just decided not to do a thing on this car until the problem actually shows up properly or something breaks. I was also alerted horribly to the supa-fast dropping in values and kind of wrote the car off in my own head! it's quite a nice feeling to be surprised your car made it to your destination, and economically too!
