Where is the glowplug contol box on a 2.0L HDi D9

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Where is the glowplug contol box on a 2.0L HDi D9

Post by KevinB »

Can anyone tell me where the glow control box is located, as I suspect mine is u/s as this morning I only just got a start, and the glowplug light on the dash went out instantly. This fault is reminisant of a P405 TD car I had some time ago, and it was found the glow control relay points had burnt out, however on the P406 I cant see the glow control relay anywhere under the bonnet
Thanks in anticipation.

Have you checked the fuse? I assume it'll be one of the huge high current fuses in the little box to the side of the battery tray...

Checking the fuses was the first thing I did, and all was OK. Then I thought that a blown fuse was unlikely due to the dashboard glow control check light coming on momentarily when the ignition is intially turned on.

Aye, I'd go with the relay too. If it's not in the engine bay relay box behind the battery, it'll probably be in the collection of relays under the dashboard fusebox by the drivers right knee. To get at the relays you need to take the plastic fascia off in the footwell, which is a few torx screws

Not sure where the control unit is, but the warning light doesn't behave the same as on a TD engine. The glow plug light goes out almost instantly on HDi's, but the plugs remain energised for some seconds after starting, depending on ambient temperature. The warning light is switched by the ECU separately to the glow plugs.

Try checking for power on the end of a glow plug, before & after starting.

The glow plug timer relay is located behind the air filter assembly, just to the right.

To test the timer relay, get a test lamp or handlamp and connect it to the earth terminal on the battery and to any wire connected to the glow plugs, turn on the ignition then see if the test lamp lights up for a few seconds then goes out, if it does, then the relay is working properly.

There is another item for operating the glow plugs located near the water bottle inside the drivers inner wing....part of the ECU.
