One way window

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

One way window

Post by Zyzym »

The drivers window on my 02 406 has a mind of it's own.
It opens without problem but doesn't want to know about closing.
Eventually it will go up, at normal speed, but about 10 minutes after I have started trying to close it. Fortunately my Pug has a superb heater.

I first noticed this problem at the beginning of February during the snow.
The window decided to go down on its own after I struggled to open the door and then started the engine. The moment I turned the ignition the window went down. Well I think that is what happened as best I can remember.
Since then the window has deteriorated to the point where I am reluctant to open for fear of not being able to shut it. As previously stated when it does go it goes at normal speed and smoothly.
Is there some sort of logic associated with closing the windows whilst locking the car which may have become corrupted and if so, how can I reset it.
I have looked for similar problems on the forum but not yet found anything quite the same.
Any advise would be welcome. 8) (bordering on frozen)

agreed.

mine used to randomly go up and down on the passenger side, changed the switch and all is well, altho now my drivers side one has taken to going down whenever i hit a nasty bump in the road, but rather than replaceing the switch again (i used a second hand one) i'll just avoid nasty bumps in the road, lol.

Thanks guys.

I went down to the local stealer for a new switch.
After enquiring after one of these the counter assistant had to sit down and be revived with smelling salts before informing me that one of these would £86+.
Has anybody any experience of stripping down an electric window switch. It seems to me a dodgy contact on the up side. Possibly the downside is dodgy also but gravity has a tendency to compensate there.
Perhaps I should test this theory out by turning the guP the wrong way up and see if the windows go up(down) instead of down(up)
Don't suppose anybody has tried this out just yet. Do they have the opposite problem in Australia?

Would be very interested but mine is only 2 way and I'm not sure if it would fit or not.
Many thanks anyway.

Having recovered from the shock of an £86+ replacement part, I decided to try and overhaul the old unit.

Removal from the door is easy, just prise out the cap at the bottom of the door handle recess, it clips in fore and aft so lever out from the side.
Once this is removed then remove the screw, #15 TRX screwdriver then lever out the complete unit.

At this point remove the wire connectors from the bottom of the unit, they use a clever sliding lock so brute force is not necessary.
I photograph the connections before removal so I know where to replace them.

The outer (top) cover is held on by clips, remove the electric mirror joystick first, pulls straight up.
Once this has been removed then turn the unit upside down and remove the next highest level. Turning upside down prevents the plungers falling out the back of the switches.
After removal (tight fit) you will find a rubber pad with 4 contacts (The blue one)

Once removed you will find contacts underneath. I cleaned mine with cotton buds and meths and also used a glass fibre brush.

Make sure you also clean up the PCB.

Rebuilding is the reversal of dismantling.
My window switch now functions perfectly.

I have more photos available if anyone needs them.

Hello,
What was the original problem. On my car the drivers window more often than not needs repeated presses of the button to get the window up,sometimes I will touch the button once and the window goes up in one straight lift, sometimes not,do you think the switch might be the problem like above?

Hi Gary

This sounds exactly the same as the problem I had.
Certainly, dismantling and cleaning will not do any harm.
The problem with bad contacts is that they are not always consistent.

I advise photographing every stage to help rebuild.
I also have a more complete range of photographs on this which I can't post due to memory constraints.
Send me a PM with your e-mail and I will forward them.

I have just fixed my drivers switch.........same sort of problem, window goes up or down like it has a mind of its own.

I simply took switch out of door pannel, opened up casing and sprayed the lot with copiuos ammounts of silicone spray. Works perfectly now.

Thanks you lot for the piccies which helped a lot.
