406 clocks / milage reading

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

I think the mileage is recorded in one of the computers (I can never remember the acronym for this one - BSU?) so the actual dials can be swapped out without fear of losing your recorded mileage.

AFAIK this one's tricky....
Mileage total is stored in the clock AND THE BSI, (I think). If you put a new clock in it 'magically' recovers the value from the previous one. If you put in a used one it will probably add them together!
Before I bought mine, I nearly bought a 2001 GTX with a similar problem.... Parked one night with 64K on the clock - next morning 181k  Took the story with a pinch of salt, but it seemed to check out.
Also heard of similar problems on V6's which the dealer claimed were due to electrical interference from using the wrong spark plugs :!: Love to hear how they explain it on a HDi...

It does add them together, but only on D9s.

A D9 is any 406 manufactured after November 1999 (also known as the Mk. 2, Phase 2, or Face-Lifted models), they are instantly distinguishable from the older D8 by the fact that there is a mesh grill on either side of the heraldic lion badge on the front of the car.

There are other differences as well, but that's the most noticeable.

ok thanks for the info.
i guess there must be a way to reset the clock unit whilst out of car or in ? i know some vw have a facility to reset once to allow clock replacement. i dont suppose its that easy tho or you wouldnt see so many million mile 406's

Dealers may be able to program the mileage...

Is it the same with a D8, which as I understand does not have a BSI unit?

If I were to swap the clocks in my D8 diesel, would the current milage be remembered or totted up on the replacemant clocks? Does the ECU hold this information?

I have always wondered this!

I don't know, but an educated guess would be that the mileage on D8s is stored in the instrument cluster, as it gets fed from the speed sender

So if i changed my clocks, I would need a dealer to amend my milage (thats if they can do such a thing).

Is the speed sender on the gearbox? Does it go direct to the clocks, or through the ECU?
Have looked a the Haynes diagram, but I may as well consult Russel Grant!

It they can and will... They may be reluctant to clock a car for someone...

It's on the output end of the diff, and I think the wire ends up at a little box somewhere behind the glovebox which I think sends signals to both the instrument cluster and the ECU

I confirm it is stored in the clocks. Had to change them on my D8 1.8 and it went from 73K to 110K :frown:
