timing?

while talking to a freind today his mrs came home in her 406td and i couldn't belive just how much quieter it was, i thought maybe it was the 2.1 or something but its the same as mine same pump etc, mine seems to have a lot o diesel clatter,as it starts fine but runs very lumpy for about1-2 seconds i thought it was the injectors and as such that was next job on the never ending to do list, but found it strange there is v little smoke, then today my friend tells me his was exactly like that and it was the pump advanced to much, would this cause the diesel clatter? and is it as easy as he says it is just slacken off the 4 pump bolts slightly and rotate the pump towards the rad a few mm?,any tips would be great before i get a complete set of injectors and find it makes no difference, does£ 130 sound about right to test and clean and re-tip my injectors, thats with them removed and taken to him
