Power steering goes light

Post by derekh »

My first post.
My old 96 P plater 406 has been trouble free until now. I've had it since 98.
But now, in a turn, left or right, the power steering goes light, ie lack of resistance, mid turn.
Can I sort this, or shoot the poor ol' girl.

You could try draining and refreshing the PAS fluid - it's something most of us overlook.

There will be a drain nut on the rack somewhere, let it out, tighten, re-fill the resevoir with new fluid, then turn the steering lock-to-lock a few times to self-vent, top up level.

Not saying this will cure the problem but it couldn't hurt?

Also that stuff I said wasn't an accurate How-too but you get the idea

Does the speedo stop working at the same time? What engine is it in yours? If it's a model with a speedo box behind the glovebox (i.e. 2.1TD, 3L V6, 2l Turbo, etc) then this could be at fault as you would have variable power steering and when my speedo stopped working, the steering would go light as it would think you weren't moving forwards. Fitted a new speedo control box and the speedo and steering now work as they are supposed to.

If you don't have the speedo box behind the glovebox ignore eveything I've said!

Yup! Speedo goes hay wire. Sounds like you've hit it on the head here.

Engine is the 2.1 TD.

Help as to the speedo contol box would be appreciated. I wonder where I left the Haynes.
Thanks for such a prompt reply.

May not have made myself clear in my last post. Or, perhaps I'm in to much of a hurry.

Problem is as you described. Speedo fluctuates and steering goes light.

How do I repair ?

Estimated cost of parts ?

Thanks in anticipation

Apologies for not seeing your first post. If you do a search lots of people have had this problem and it is a box located up behind the glovebox. Get another box from the scrappies (either 2l turbo, 3l V6 or 2.1TD's use this box) and swap them over. A new box from Peugeot is about £50.

I liberated a speedo box from a scrappies so when I fixed mine it cost me a grand total of £0.00!
