Newbie HDi Owner

Post by 1964marco »

Hi all

I'm Marco from Cornwall.. I recently purchased a 2002 406 HDi 110 Executive, done 174k now.. but having a few problems, coolant over temperautre warning and flashing up stop.. the fan doesnt spin when I turn the air-con on.. coolant temperature gauge not working, I also have defective airbag warning and anti pollution device warning.

Other than that.. its lovely top spec, unmarked heated and electric cream leather interior.. it'll be a cracking car once I can fix these little problems.

Hopefully.. those probs are common and I can find some solutions on here!

Cheers

Which fan do you mean - the big one in the engine bay, or the hearer blower?

I suspect the coolant issues can be fixed by replacing the coolant temperature sensor (or sensors)

My internal heater blower fan works fine.. the fan that isnt working is the radiator fan.. I took off the grill yesterday.. the fan is quite difficult to turn by hand with the engine off.. doesnt spin freely like the one on my sons Mk4 Astra..

My model also appears to only have a single radiator fan, I would have expected twin fans.. my other sons 2.0 HDi Xsara has twin radiator fans.

Hi Marco & Welcome 8)

Later HDi's only have one fan - AFAIK, mine has never run to cool the engine, but it should come on when the aircon's working.

Which engine is yours? - must be either a 2.0 HDi 110 or 2.2 Hdi 136?

Airbag warning light is usually a case of unplugging / re-plugging the connectors under the seats a few times.

There is only one coolant temp sensor on later models.

Does your aircon actually work?
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

My model is the 2.0 HDi 110..

Inside the car, the digital climate control/air con interface works.. I can push all of the buttons and they appear to work.. the air con doesnt blow cold though and isnt able to demist the car which is extremely annoying!

With the engine running and switching on the air con the radiator fan doesnt spin at all.. I expected it too..

Driving out yesterday.. had STOP flashing, coolant temperature high warning.. the fan on the radiator isnt working, and the dash temperature gauge is not registering anything!

Dodgy temperature sender unit? I have located the green sensor underneath the airbox and attached to the side of the engine block..

or.. broken fan?

Or both?!

Cheers

Have you checked the fan fuses? - MF2, MF3, MF12, F26 & F32, all in the engine compartment fusebox, are involved in fan / aircon control.

The radiator fan is controlled by 3 different fan relays, (main, low speed, hi speed), which are operated partly by the engine ECU in response to coolant temp and also by the aircon 'pressostat'.

Do you know if the coolant level is OK - these cars have several bleed screws to vent air while refilling as the reservoir is not the highest point. The intermittent nature of your coolant temp warnings makes me wonder if the sensor is 'dry' some of the time, or whether the sensor connections might be corroded.....

It'd certainly be worth your while disconnecting the coolant temp sensor to see if that alters the behaviour of fan and/or temp gauge, (though I don't know if that will turn the fan on).

The most common aircon problem is a leaky condenser / no gas. Easiest test is to carefully & very briefly depress one of the valves on the aircon pipes in front of / below the battery, this will tell you if there's any gas in it. If you have gas, try listening for the a/c compressor clutch clicking in & out with the engine off / ingnition on as you operate the buttons.
