ignition and key replacement

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

ignition and key replacement

Post by notajeep »

Hi,

I have an old s-reg 1.9td D8, that I have managed to get the key well and truly jammed in the ignition (it has been a bit tetchy for a while, so entirely my own fault!! lol)

I can salvage the remote fob part of the key, but I don't know if that is coded to the ignition barrel itself or a nearby gadget ion the column somewhere.

Can I get a scrap barrel and key blade and use my existing fob, or will it all need doing properly with new coded fobs, key blades and barrel?

Any idea of cost of parts if all new required?

thanks in advance for any help/advice.

you are in luck its not coded to the barrel, so as long as you keep the same electrics you will be fine

my barrel collapsed and i took it apart, it was acutally the bit on the back of the barrel that was the problem, replacing that then meant the barrel was fine, happy days kept the barrel etc!

Yep, it's picked up by a aerial loop around the barrel. The transponder chip is inside the key fop (tiny black brick) which you're keeping.

Might be an idea to get new lock and key, then have the old one to bits and see if you can fix it using parts from your replacement (you can hardly make it worse)

that's great chaps, thanks for that.
Thankfully I had just purchased its replacement (2.2hdi estate :-) ) so there was no urgency it getting it back up and running, only for resale purposes.
I will get new year out of the way and get up the scrap yard for the bits, I will report back on how I get on.

Thanks again.
