Rear tie bar/rod

Post by JD406 »

What is the rear tie bar/rod?

Ive just been for an MOT and it failed on "Offside rear tie bar/rod has excessive play in a ball joint". Could anyone tell me where its located and possibly a pic of the thing, also where could I get a new one and how much/hard are they to fit?

Cheers

Those are the antirollbar drop links from the look of them, you need the top links.
You can get them from Eurocarparts,
Here's a link to some on ebay.
While you're at it I would check the condition of the drop links and the antirollbar bushes.

Those are the link rods / tie bars pictured in the link I posted, but do check out the anti roll bar link rods which fit vertically,(these have a ball joint at either end) opposite to the ones in my link that fit horizontally.

I thought tie rods were another name for track rods, as in the bits linking the steering rack to the hub carrier? :?

Some people also call them drag links....it all depends on any one person's version of terminology, I have a feeling we went round in circles in answer to the op.
I guess the mot tester knows what he means, maybe the op should ask him.

if its the wee plastic vertical ones there a pain in the bumholeyo to change if the old ones on it do not have a bit for the spaner to go on, on the opiste side to the nut,
just changed two today that didint. took about half an hour each.
had to pop the ball joint off and get molegrips on the ball itself in the end.

bit of a pain to get into even if they were new. id advise wd40 the day before if poss.

Top tip - I jumped onto the eurocarparts website and the link arms are cheaper than GFS even and delivered! :cheesy:

Any comments on getting the bolts loose on the inner body fixing?

Well the nuts are the killer and I didn't want to destroy the ball joint before being sure to get the inner end off... so I ran out of time and feel I miserable failure! At least I spotted the piece of metal in my tyre when re-fitting the wheel so I know I need to get this sorted before my next trip on the Motorway!

Thanks for all the tips chaps! :cheesy:
