Hi there
Im having a problem with my peugeot 406, 2.0 HDi Rapier.
Today its started making this weird noise which is coming from the timing belt area, but i cant be certain. it only occurs when idle, as if i get it to 1500rpm it goes away. the noise is quite loud and is clearly heard from inside the car with windows up. ive recorded a video and uploaded it to my uni server, the link is below, so please have a listen and let me know what you think it could be.

Crankshaft pulley (Common)
Or a aux/timing rubber belt is perished and is hitting the timing belt cover or the aux belt hitting stuff on route.

*IF* its the Crankshaft pulley, its complety knackered and sounds very bad, worse than mine and mine was on its last legs,
Complete failure can result in;
No auxilary drive, i.e. No PAS, No A/C, No alternator charge.
Apparantly if the aux belt comes off and frays it can also take the timing belt.
Again... I dont know if its the crankshaft pulley, but sounds familar

I had this on a Berlingo, crankshaft pulley yet again!
406 estate, 2.1TD, I fixed her, then part exchanged her for a Mercedes E300TD Avantgarde Estate.
Hmmmm, straight 6 goodness!

yep turns out according to the mechanic its the alternator pulley that needs replacing, hopefully not the entire alternator
