You need to specify what engine you have.

There is a spring loaded tensioner between the crank pulley & the power steering pump, with a spanner on the hex of the tensioner turn it anti-clockwise against th spring until a 4mm pin can be inserted through the tensioner arm into the body.
This then keeps the belt slack so it can be removed/replaced. This is possible without removing the wheel & wheel arch liner, but it's a struggle, especialy with AIR CON. The bottom pulley is difficult to "check" but basically you are looking for any movement between inner & outer part or any sign of "metal filings", a knocking or "tappet" type noise is also common in failing pulleys. Th pulley on one of my cars has just failed today for the second time & 170000 miles, the symptoms sounded like the alternator bearings had gone.
Plenty of new pulleys on e-bay & I have just ordered 2 so I have a spare(with 7 of these engines I'll need it sooner or later). I am not aware of an "upgraded" pulley but if anyone knows of them please let me know.

Also you can improve access to the tensioner by removing the ECU box on top of the inner wing. makes putting the pin in a lot easier.

On the bottom pulley issue - I understood the 'old' ones have 2 slots/keyways and the new uprated ones have 3 slots to accomodate the damping motion/torque. I shelled out £120.00 from the stealers because I was advised not to buy the ebay £50.00 jobs :?

Yes that looks exactly like the one that's just gone on mine - for the second time.

Here's my old failed 'two slot' one:

I was told to avoid the cheap ones as they are pattern/remanufactured/exchange parts and won't last - however I can't explain the genuineness (new word) now of the ebay ones these days :? maybe I was ripped at the dealer? maybe you can get a pucker one for £50.00? I don't know.

I would just like to say that the pulley in the picture was the one that was replaced
when the cambelt was changed both of which did not need replacing as both had done
less than 1000 miles my fault for not reading/trusting what the supplied service
sheets said. So i spent £300 for no reason

I now await with anticipation remarks you may have :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:
