Sitting comfortably...then i'll begin

Post by wes1001 »

Well the old girl went in for the MOT today and i was a bit worried. Nothing i could put my finger on but nearly 10yrs have passed since she rolled off the production line and worn out bushes and knackered bearings and the suchlike were springing to mind.

Got back to the testing station and was greeted with a thumbs up and " no problems - a great car you got there "

He said the emissions were brilliant considering the mileage and age ( Lambda reading was 1.008 - that may mean something to the ppl in the know among you :D )

This is the second year running she has gone through without a hitch.

I have had four 405's and this is my second D8 '6. I got her with 83k on the clock and now it's reading 107k so in nearly 25,000 miles all i have had to replace is one corroded turbo coolant pipe which was leaking- a whopping £17 and a couple of hours in my garage to fix.

Anyway the reason for this diatribe is that as of lately i have been thinking about getting a little run a round as i can't really justify running a 2.0 petrol turbo when a diesel would suffice.

Yes the passenger airbag cover may be curling up at the edges like a stale cheese sarnie and the drivers window now and again decides to open itself for no reason but it's day's like this that i still think that's it's a beautiful looking motor and i wouldn't give it up for the world. :cheesy:

I echo your closing statement.

I've decided, my 6 will not be sold on to any old person when I'm ready to get a new car. If anything she'll go to a good friend. But it looks like I will keep her forever.

Nice one wes.

I wouldn't bother buying another 'run-about' it will just end up costing you more in road tax, insurance etc. And Diesels aren't that economical for local door to door work.

You do about 12000 miles a year at, say, 27 mpg = £1,900.00 per year in petrol

A Diesel will do 36 MPG = £1,433.00 in fuel

Only £467.00 saving, so not worth it really.

It is possible to get some very very good economy out of the turbo if you're gentle and don't mind going a bit slower - mine gets 42mpg (well over 50 on motorways) average on a daily basis :D

The 406 is a brilliant car ain't it? :)

mjb... wouldn't it be easier to just buy a diesel? :P

My 2.1 TD has now covered 650 miles since fill up and the needle still hasn't entered the "orange zone". Could get at least another 50 out of it, so that's 700 miles to a tank... doing 80mph on motorways without hiding behind trucks and being late for work cos of slow driving :P

I drive like I do because I can't afford an oil change, let alone a diesel :P

I just met up with my ex to catch up on stuff and she decided to buy a new car. So she went on her own to Carcraft in Newport (or some other big company like that) and got duped into buying a bright yellow Shitroen Sack-so, X reg, 1.1L engine with no power steering. Cost? 4 grand. FOR A SAXO?!?!? Idiot :P

Anyway, I filled the tank up with diesel just now having done 660 miles and the light came on. Turns out I still had 8 litres of the stuff left in the tank, so I COULD have driven to 700 mile mark. Lovely :)
