Car Costs

Post by flyerdave »

Some of you may be interested in this.

I run a local community website and have done a spreadsheet to do with the costs of running a vehicle.

http://www.chandlersford.org.uk/car-costs.html

You can download it and apply your own infomation to find out the true cost per mile.

WARNING! Some of you may decide to throw the car away and walk when you discover just how much the real cost is per mile.

When I first worked it all out and discovered the amount of tax i was nearly knocked sideways.

An accountant once tried to tell me I was wrong but I asked him to let me have the corrections but never heard back from him. I have worked with figures most of my working life and am confident that they are correct.

I get 22p per mile.

I'm not sure that including income tax and national insurance is sensible because its not a cost associated with the car: I still (resentfully) have to pay it even if I don't spend what's left on the car.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

There is another way to look at it though. I originally set it up to work out the true cost of commuting to work and what % of salary it would be, as the money spent on the car is affer you have paid tax and NI and you are paying further tax on what you have left, up to about 83% in total. (infact you pay tax on tax plus VAT) Sometimes it is better to take a lower paid local job as the cost of getting to a better one means less money in your pocket for other things.

22p per mile is a great rate - are you sure that you have included all the costs and altered everything?

I have quite a few elderly customers with low mileage, hardly used cars, some of them less than 1000 miles per year.I often wonder if they would be better off using taxis instead of having the expense of running a car.

Nah, the Golf comes out at 35p/mile because it rarely sees anything but short journeys over very hilly urban ground, but it's still vastly cheaper than doing those trips in the coupé, which literally uses over 3x the fuel  Heavy car, cold engine, ECU dumping unburnt fuel to warm up the cat, etc

My coupé spends 95% of its time and 99% of its miles cruising at more than 50mpg on clear motorways (either European, or UK at night), and the other 5%/1% being cained to within an inch of its life at about 10mpg average  so I entered a conservative 40mpg for it

My 407 rates at 43p a mile, but then I should leave out some of the variables (such as depreciation) as I don't intend to sell it.

The other issue is that the more you use it, the lower the cost per mile, but then as the miles rack up (or indeed, if they are unusually low) then the cost of accelerated wear or the higher risk of breakdown need accounting for. A good little guide though.

It's a shame it doesn't account for other factors - my 407s unerring reliability has doubtless saved me £££s over the years and, more importantly, leaves me with peace of mind, which is priceless.
