Post by aust250378 »

hi all,

I have had a quote for £300 pounds for a cambelt change, is this reasonable? what have other people on here paid?

Regards

Sounds too much to me, the cambelt change is not that difficult on the 406.

I'd shop around but also insist on a full 'Cambelt Kit' including idlers and tensioners etc AND always change the water pump whilst at it because you've already done 90% of the work to get to the thing.

i would go to a moter factors and price up the cambelt kit, then you can decide if the price is good or bad.
also do the water pump as someone else said.

Think I paid about 100 for my local self-employed chap to do it couple years back.

Had mine done a few weeks ago at a local garage, cam belt kit, new alternator belt and engine mount changed, came in at £155, but that was with a small mates rates discount. I'd had a quote of £200 for cam belt kit and water pump plus labour from the garage I had the car from.
Didn't have the water pump done this time which may come back and bite me later on.

I did ask at the stealers for a joke and the price came back just under £500 !!!!!!! I thanked him very much for his time and bought a bag of sill clips :cheesy:

Well, I have asked around at various garages £300 or there abouts seems to be the going rate, I even rang a specialist and they quoted £330 all in.

Looks like I'll be raiding more than the piggy bank! :)
