Thoughts on the coupe?

Hey everyone...

Well due to a major change in my circumstances and finances, I am looking at getting a new car...

Every car i've bought up to now has been based around my kids, who are both old enough to not need a pram etc.

I'm currently driving the 406 D8 2.1 and despite it's amazing economy whilst doing long drives, it doesn't do so well travelling to and from work.

I've just come back from France where I saw an amazing set of Coupe's and was fairly amazed on how quiet the 2.2 HDI was.

So... I've been looking around and found a few going on ebay fairly cheap, and wondered whether anyone could give some advice?

I fancy the 3.0 v6. It'd return the same mileage i'm getting now (on short journey's) but will out-look and out-perform the 2.1 Saloon.

Other then the normal Peugeot related bewares, what should I look out for?

The 3.0 Litre can cost you the better part of £550 for a timing belt, so make sure that has been done recently.

If you commute to work and will be using the coupe, I would recommend the 2.0 Litre Petrol or 2.2 HDI (The latter could set you back 4 grand for a good one).
The V6 is good on longer distances, but the thirstiness on the stop start traffic of the daily commute will surprise you.
I don’t care what the V6 owners “claim”, the 2.0L is much thriftier on the fuel in stop start traffic.
However, the V6 is the way to go if you prefer speed over economy, it’s pretty rapid for its size and sounds awesome.

Your best port of call for what to look out for is http://www.peugeot406coupe.com. Plenty info there to chew on.
But I find they are fairly biased with their opinions and will only sing the praises of the V6.

I fancied the 2.2 HDI originally, but to be honest, I doubt i'd gain anything by getting one over a petrol in my circumstances.

I'm after something a little sporty that doesn't cost a fortune to own. The coupe looked great and as mentioned below, an example of the 2.2 HDI that I saw looked and sounded great.

There is a 2.2 Petrol out there that has more oomph than the 2.0 but they're pretty hard to find.
The 2.0 is no slouch, push it and it will deliver, it will also keep up with the V6 once up to speed too.

However, the coupe is something you get for its looks, in my opinion. There are only around 2,500 left on our roads so you can sometimes go for a month without seeing another one.

Did the coupe ever get the 2.0 tub? They certainly got the 2.2 petrol 'cos I seed one on the electric bay recently.

You really should join the coupe club Gav, there's an interesting discussion on there at the moment about people wanting to sell and how little they're fetching. I get the impression that a couple of guys might take a cheeky offer and one of them has a 2001 V6 SE http://www.peugeot406coupe.com/phpBB3/v ... =1&t=30878

I'm on the lookout for one at the moment but as an additional car in the fleet to take out on weekends and generally polish , but I'm torn with the exact model to get. I'd really like a D9 V6 SE too, but if you get one registered after 1st March 2001 you're looking at £435 tax per year which is a bit steep for a hobby car. Registered before that date the tax is £210 which isn't nearly as painful, so that really narrows my search .

Being a Peugeot, the coupe isn't without it's faults. And generally, the faults tend to be expensive, and many times, I've been at the mercy of a dealer in the past.

But when things go well on it, it's the dog's bits. I love the car, and my main problem now is i can't see when I'll ever want to change it, because I'll never have a car that looks as good again.

It sounds like you only do short journey's to and from work mostly? if so then I would not get a diesel. A diesel engine pootling around stop/start is likely to soot up and cause emissions faults on a 2.2HDi.

I'd get a cheap old V6 (R-reg kinda thing and use it) or a later 2.0 sparker nice and clean (02/03 reg kinda thing and polish it)
if you can find a 2.2 petrol that would be a belter for sure (170bhp).

Bear in mind though that as your kids grow they may find it difficult in the back.

Not at all Welts, you can get two 6ft tall adults in the back and comfortably too. I know because I have done that with my coupe.
I also have a regular passenger I take to work who is not short either.
That's what is so good about the coupe; It has the sporty look and performance (with the V6 for HDI) but has a huge boot and can seat 4 adults comfortably. The chassis makes it comfortable on the road and it's economical.

You know what, even Mrs Welly (whilst on Holiday) looked at a Coupe and said "why don't you get one of those next?, I like those etc etc," so I got the Volvo which WILL NOT sit anyone comfortably in the back (anyone with legs fitted that is)

My kids have started to complain about the lack of leg room now

is the 2.2 petrol the same lump as in the 2.2 406 sri?

if so, i can let you know its a good engine. it pulls my estate very nicely.

Keep looking at the 2.2HDi coupes and insurance is another £500 ontop of the £1400 I've paid already but I really want one

Think I'm going to wait till my Uncle gives me his though and use his for a little bit

Got to say Welly, tosh!!

I just had 2 adults in the back of mine for a long journey and, much as I can see what they mean, they thought they were of the most comfortable back seats in any car they've been in. You've only got to look at the coupe's back seats to see what I mean
