Last night, we bought this.

Post by CountryPug »

My mate has a fully modded and fettled Astra, and as nice as it is, has become completely impractical for a daily driver. Especially as he's a tyre fitter/farmer. Anyhow, he called me last night for a lift to go see a car which will be used as his daily drive. And WHAT A CAR :D

It's a late 92' Zest 1.9D with 142k, Mot'd til October and goes like a train. We took it for a spin down a twisty country road last night and it just handles! We even got brave enough to test the classic liftoff oversteer of the 205 :cheesy:

All this driving pleasure for £300, Sorted 8)

Fantastic little cars. I had one a few years ago to get me to work and back...... Most reliable car I have ever owned. They handle so well. The reason I got mine was a bloke I worked with for a time had one with 228,000 miles and he had only serviced it a few times! Every panel was dented (he was in demolition) the car was full of sledge hammers, iron bars, old generator etc etc and it still went like a train thus me getting one.....although I serviced mine every 5,000 miles and cleaned her once a week!

The first company I worked at in 1987 ran loads of 205 d's. They were honest little things and would take huge punishments in their stride (unlike the company).

I 'bid' for one of the last ones on the fleet, it was a 5-door XLDT in a nasty shade of blue and had been used to ferry 4 electricians up and down the motorways for 3 years from new and had about 140K on it. I could tell it was a gem underneath all that fag ash and road grime but missed out to a rival employee;s bid.........yep, one of them electricians who'd been it the thing every day out bid all of us :supafrisk:

Happy days......

Cracking wee car!

205s seem to have aged well, that one there is very tidy. No rust compared to Fiestas etc. of similar vintage.

Very nice! Jealous as sick of fussy temperamental HDis. :D

Severely tempted.

The XUDs were fantastic bulletproof engines.
Ruined when Peugeot-Citroen decided to send a junior technician on an auto-electronics course, and he came back with wacky ideas about drive-by-wire and bloody clutch switches.

"Monsieur, but a have un idea! Why don't we, instead of 'aving ze cable driving ze car, avez un electronique sensor, reading waafer-thin differenses en voltage?"

"Bon soir! Un idea fantastique pour les services garages!"

Merc did the same. Bulletproof until they started dabbling in electronics.

It is the same with car design. Peugeot used to make some handsome cars in the 205, 306, 405, 406 (especially the D9 with the big black grille and angry lights), 605 etc.

But they went and ruined it when the junior designer of the headlights found a set-square that could do triangles.

"Mais oui, les lights pointy!"

Horrible looking pointy bloody lights on everything in their range now.

It's not just Peugeot that have ruined their designs with daft lights, Alfa are now destroying their design credibility with the MiTo and the Guilleta. Compare these to the devastatingly beautiful frontal design of the Brera / 159.
