Will this alloy fit the 406 (307 Ariane alloy)

Post by CountryPug »

I've been looking around for some alloys for my car and these have taken my fancy. I've been told that the 17" 307 HDi challenger alloys need spacers to fit the 406. Wondering if this applys to these rims as well. They are 16" with 205/55 tyres.

The fitting chart is bull. I used the Carlsalter one that said the same - 307 offset the same as 406. They're not. I bought a gorgeous set of Arianes only to find they were no good as they had a 31mm offset. The face of the wheel was almost touching the brake caliper & the suspension would have hit the tyre due to the wheel being to far inwards as the wheel is 6.5ins wide. I'm afraid it's 406 wheels or spacers.

My 406 LX D9 is wearing a set of 15" Apollo alloys from a 307. No spacers. Also no problems.

True, it is fairly close to the standard calipers on the front wheels; if I had Brembo brakes on the fronts, I think the 307 alloys wouldn't fit without spacers, but t'be honest, if I had Brembos I'd be looking at much bigger wheels first anyway (17s or 18s).

Yes, your 15" alloys fit, but they are only 6" wide & visibly further inside the arches than standard 406 alloys. I speak from experience with the Arianes as I was gutted when I found they wouldn't fit mine as I think they are a much prettier wheel than the 406 16s.

You only need to do the maths to see for yourselves. The offset is calculated in mm from the centre of the wheel to the mounting face & the Corail 406 wheels that I had were an 18mm offset & 6ins wide. That gave 94mm from the inner edge of the rim to the mounting face. The Arianes I got were a 31mm offset (stamped on the outer edge of the back of the wheel) & 6.5Ins wide - that gives 114mm from the inner edge of the wheel to the mounting point. If your 15ins alloys have the same offset, you have 107mm. That 7mm difference was enough to leave the cup on the bottom of the shock touching the shoulder of the tyre on the front of my car.

So, without spacers, you get wider wheels that sit further inside the arches, rub the tyres against the suspension & give just enough clearance from the brake caliper to get a fag paper through. I ended up settling for a set of Hoggar wheels (7 flat spokes) from a coupe.

I've just made a horrible discovery - I probably would have been better off getting spacers & fitting the Arianes to my car. The Hoggar wheels I got from a coupe don't mount onto the hub centre - they are only held in by the 4 bolts as the mounting face is a bit strange. Rather than being a flat face, they have 4 spoke type things that come out to meet the hub. Don't know if this is because the coupe has something on the hub that I'm missing or what, but I wish I'd just bought some hubcentric spacers & fitted the Arianes now as they were mint!

At least they sold on Ebay for £100 more than I paid for them otherwise I'd be really pi**ed.

Don't suppose anyone has a pic of a coupe hub (or the hub of any other Hoggar shod 406) so we can see why the wheel is like this do they?

Summat wrong there mate. Apart from the V6s with brembos etc most of the coupes have exactly the same hubs and brakes as most of the saloons / estates.

Similar, but the 4 spoke type things are much longer. Spoke to a coupe owner yesterday who has the Hoggars fitted as standard & he confirmed that the hub is the same as mine. The wheel does grip the hub centre, but only very lightly - unlike most wheels, it won't sit on until a bolt has been placed. He also informed me that some tyre fitting places can't balance them properly because they can't mount them on their machines properly. This would explain why I've now got a bit of a wobble between 60 & 70mph. There is also a really irritating drone that seems to accompany these wheels too - I thought mine was where I have 4 different tyres on the wheels, but he said his coupe has always had it.

Might have to go back to the steelies & re-assess the situation later. It's a real shame because the car does look really nice with them on (even though the wheels are a bit rough), but hopefully within the next couple of weeks I should have a better plan of what to do wheel wise.

The fellow I was speaking to has just bought a set of the Starfish wheels to see if that cures his drone, so if he gets a good result, I may just settle on a set of those, even though I don't really think they suit anything other than coupes.

I know where you are coming from , difficult to decide if wheels will look
good on your car without actually seeing them , something that can't be done
if being purchased off the like's of ebay , too late when you have bought them ,
you either have to put up with them or sell them on , if you do use them you
are never going to be happy :frown:

My 2nd 406 (a T reg D9 when it was 3 years old) got treated to a set of brand new Team Dynamics multispoke 17s & they looked fabulous, but can't find a decent (& affordable) set of wheels like those anywhere now. Everybody makes these weird & wonderful designs now where the centre of the wheel protrudes 6ins from the wheel rim & I just don't like them.

Bring back the old TSW Imolas & Hockenheims - classic wheel designs that looked good on any car!
