Radio

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Radio

Post by sirwiggum »

Big drive through England, and the radio packed in. Luckily we had enough CDs to keep us sane (despite it randomly skipping on some CDs with no scratches).

Radio would work for maybe 5 minutes when the car is started, then it would go high-pitched like one of those sound effects, then it would lose reception.

Reception would come and go maybe a couple of seconds at a time, like driving where you are on the edge of the broadcast footprint, but this is directly line of sight from a transmitter, and using the strong signal BBC stations to test.

Thought maybe rainwater was getting in by the aerial, so siliconed it up. No difference.

Would the head unit be packing in if it is perfect for a couple of minutes and then goes haywire?

It is a Clarion built in unit with a CD player.

That sounds like a fault with the receiver :(

Hi, yea I've popped it out with 2 allen keys and made sure the aerial was in properly, made no difference jiggling it about.
It will sit for maybe 5 mins with perfect reception, then go high pitched then lose reception, those first 5 mins make me suspect the aerials grand.

Think earwig is right it is the unit.

If I get one from a scrappies or fleabay, do I have to get it coded to my car? Or are they plug-and-playable?

Cheers!

(Should this be in ICE rather than electrical? Assumed it wa more of an electrical fault than an ICE upgade advice request?)

I'm afraid so :( Might be a better option to get an after-market one that plays mp3s etc. I know I'd welcome the excuse

Btw don't stick it in the bin 'cos I need the front panel circuit board

I remember my amplified clarion used to do random pops and bangs, but not little ones......massive shocking bangs like a brick has hit the car

I don't think the Clarion standard units are much cop after a few years :(

Might be a good excuse to upgrade to something else, shame though in a way because the standard unit fills the dash nicely :|

Shame, as I liked the steering wheel controls and the integrated display.

Steve Earwig, will contact you when I get round to replacing it.

Playing CDs at the moment. For the most part, I have a short commute, so even if I wanted the radio on it would work for a few minutes. This morning, for example, I got the traffic news that the roads were clear (school hols = less 4x4s).

with my previous Pug i had a similar problem and thot the unit was knackered and off i went to the scrappy and got a similar clarion cd player and the same issues where there.it turned out the aerial of the radio had snapped halfway and had to reroute the wiring up to the base of the aerial.depending on your model i think the radio is coded to the car via the bsi unit if its a D9.
