2.2 hdi hissing noise
hi i have had a 406 executive estate 2.2 hdi for a month now ,sorted a few niggles out and the cars running good and 43 mpg which is a lot better than my dicovery td5. theres a hissing noise when i take my foot off accelerater at first i thought it was tyre noise it goes away if i dip clutch or accelerate, i can only hear it with windows down, is something ready to blow?

Re: 2.2 hdi hissing noise
Everything I can think of would get louder when you accelerate
Broken exhaust flexy would make the turbo louder, clutch release bearing would make noise when stationary, Vacuum line off a solenoid? What's the performance like?
Hmm, I wonder what a leak between the FAP and cat would sound like...

Re: 2.2 hdi hissing noise
Could be the hose coming from the manifold into the turbo is either loose or leaking. That will create a loud whistling noise when driving.

Re: 2.2 hdi hissing noise
the performance is good, if i put my foot down its surprisingly quick for a diesel, when its moving i just cant pin this noise down to left right side or front or back of car.i

Like any other leaky zorst, just more expensive. (Not really likely to leak here, it's a bolted flange with steel gasket).steve_earwig wrote: I wonder what a leak between the FAP and cat would sound like...
Mine does something sort of similar - when you ease off, you can hear the turbo spooling down and at one point the noise seems more prominent. Mine goes quiet again once it's been idling / off throttle for maybe 20 seconds

Re: 2.2 hdi hissing noise
Mine's frayed & blowing a bit too. There are a few possible ways round it:
1). Replace the cat:- Peugeot £1200, onlineautomotive, £131
2). Get somebody to weld in a flexi repair section, about £25 for the bit + labour. Danger is there's very little pipe dowstream of the flexi before you reach the cat/FAP upstream temp. sensor & pressure sensing pipe.
3). De-FAP your car then you don't need to worry about the sensors in theory, bear in mind it's early days with this development.
4). If you go for 3). you should be able to fit an exhaust from a 110, or a bespoke turbo-back system
I'm still trying to decide, it'll probably be option 2 as I can get it all done for about £50, just need to be able to spare the car long enough for the guy to take it off, get the bit & sort it, so I need to expect to be without it for 2-3 days.
(But if I wait much longer I won't have a choice).

Re: 2.2 hdi hissing noise
thanks for all the tips dogslife , i have been on the 406 coupe forum and theres a free download to boost bhp to 180 and also deletes the fap and additive gubbins so you dont get the particle filter blocked message you have to buy a cable off ebay 22 quid then connect laptop to ecu port, ive printed off the instructions and ordered the cable, you still have to clean the fap out when you have done the ecu if this works it will be great bit nervous though, quite a few have done it already with good results.
