What do you hate about the car?

Post by Captain Jack »

As much as we all love our taxis, there always seems to be something wrong with mine. This is rarely anything serious but enough to annoy me and there was never a time when EVERYTHING worked on it.

For example, I still have the sinking clutch issue that I've had since I bought it. The COM2000 stalk is on the way out and the replaced flexi-hose/cat converted is LOUD. It's almost like I have a huge hole somewhere in the exhaust system (maybe I do?) but I think it's to do with the fact that I didn't put any "paste" between the ring joints. Another crawl-under-the-car for the weekend.

And those bloody under trays keep falling off. The sharp edges of the subframe that the trays are clipped onto using the zip-ties, actually cut through the zip-ties. Maybe I should get some metal ties.. but then, do I really want my car to be held together by zip-ties?

There's also some rattle coming from the steering wheel. Could be the aforementioned failing COM2000 stalk?

The point is - there's always SOMETHING to be done. And I am tired... Can't I just have a car that... works? (I tried a Honda. It doesn't just... work :x )

Sorely tempted by a 2.2 407 coupe petrol (as turbolag says its reliability is unrivalled) but money is tight at the moment.

I can't say there's anything I hate about it, apart from the ever lasting thirst for petrol!
I'm even semi impressed with the handbrake following my last go at it!

I'm sorry but it's cause you own a french car.
I always thought it was a load of bollocks about french cars but now I've experienced a few and owned my own I realise french cars are a pile of crap.
Thats why my 406 is going to be replaced by a Focus.

Bit of a sweeping statement there Sam. You've been unlucky with your cars but I've had two 406's and they've both been solid.

From personal experience (owned a 106, 107, two 405's and a 406) French cars are superb and even with high mileage I've had no serious bother. Could give you a long list of my mates cars which have given far more expensive bother (with far fewer miles).

Only gripe I have about my 406 is that it isn't a 405  can't help it, the 405 was my first love and shall never be replaced

That's the thing - I've never had serious stuff go wrong with it. The engine and the main bits have all been quite solid. It's all the niggles that come with it - described above. It's like Peugeot put a lot of effort into getting the engine and drive lines bolted in fairly well, but the rest they didn't bother.

Same with my mum's Clio. Engine has been relatively OK, considering it's now 12 years old, but the whole car is literally falling to pieces. While 12 years is a lot for any car, it's been like since it was 5 years old....

My Grandad's 306 is nothing but trouble, it gets serviced every 6 months and does about 100miles a week at most.
My Uncles 406 has just had to spend £200+ having two new driveshafts cause of an ABS problem and the whole central locking system rebuilt. Then 2 days later the thrust bearing went and killed the clutch.
I know of a Focus with the 1.6HDi engine (Peugeot lump) thats killed 2 turbo's in a year.
Two of my mates have 106's and there forever going wrong aswell.

Peugeot's are just rubbish. Just mines more rubbish than most.

Now let's take into the equation my Mums Focus.
It's 7 years old, done stop/start driving all it's life. Got 70k on it, always run on supermarket fuel, always overdue for a service, and the worse it's had break on it was 2 coilpacks which is common for a Zetec engine. I'd rather spend £30 on a coilpack than £££'s on other problems.

Lets also take into consideration my Dad's old ST220
Had done 100k when we got rid of it in 2008, was 5 years old, never missed a beat, got taken upto 7500rpm daily, FSH, nothing went wrong on it???

Now let's take a look at my Aunti's 307 HDi...
4 years old, on it's second engine, wouldn't start last week, need's a new fuel pressure sender £££ and on it's second clutch in 65k

My car owes me £3k in repairs now. I could have got a bloody good Focus for that. But having my Mum's in a few months, and I bet it'l be a damm sight more reliable than anything Peugeot. I will defend my car to the hills, it's a brilliant car to drive, I've had some awesome times with it and it's got good sentimental value to me. But enoughs enough I think.

Mine is mechanically sound.

The only niggles I have are minor electrical woes - the passenger electric window doesn't move, the external temperature sensor doesn't work (and hasn't since I bought the car) - but everything else is just fine.

The one thing I hate is that it's not got a more powerful engine :(

I don't have mine anymore but I can still picture that flappy flimsy rubber strip on the door sill :x

Oh and how can I forget the flop-me-down hairy carpet under the fan in the passenger footwell :(

Handbrake

I'd have another one though and it would have to be a late 2.2 petrol SRi estate 8)

The wind catches the door and it dents it, I think every 406 in the land has this little dent :frown:

I tried replicating this by hand and chicken'd out when there was still a good 2 inches left to push the door back even further
