I have a bit of a counter argumet there Bailes with the reliability of Peugeots I have had close contact with

Fathers 1998 406 1.9TD - One of those damn dashboard bulbs that shows the mileage went after 145,000. Ridiculous reliability there. :cheesy: My uncle has it since 2003 and replaced the interior with a higher spec one. He is thinking of shooting it in order to stop the damn thing

Fathers 2000 406 2.0HDi - Bottom Pulley went once while on a motorway and had to be replaced. No other issues to report other than stupid little things that I fiddled with in my one year of ownership. It was the best car Ive ever owned

Fathers 2003 607 2.2HDi SE - Fantastic car. Never had an issue with it. A central locking issue was resolved by poor replacement of the passenger door card when the regulator was fixed before our ownership. The FAP went off once and it went into limp mode but this was resolved by filling it with EOLYS stuff.

Mothers 2002 307 1.6 SE - Great car. Owned for 1.5 years. Never an issue

Mothers 2007 307 1.4 ST - Bought from new. Squealing brakes when reversing sometimes. No other issues to date after 40,000 miles.

Sisters 2001 206 1.1 SE - Great runabout. Never any issues.

Brothers 2004 307 1.6HDi - He's had a lot of trouble with the FAP and the software but he hasnt taken care of it and you reap what you sew. I explained that to him.

My current 2000 406 2.0 Coupé - Reliability wise its great, The many electrics work great. But the engine is past it and the piston rings are worn. More and more I am starting to believe that it was thrashed to within an inch of its life as a Reci car in a few rallys. Its previous owner was a rally driver and I found evidence in it of it being a reci car more than once.

My Past 2000 406 2.0 HDi - My first Peugeot. Not the one my dad owned. It was another one. An LX. Perfect car but it was neglected over a period and after some homemade repairs by the previous owner, it needed some more expensive repairs by my mechanic. It was a good car though and never let me down.

I think you're getting the picture but I'll continue anyway......

Uncle 1 2001 406 HDi GLX - Had to get the DMF replaced soon after he bought it. I dont think it was well cared for until his ownership. The previous owner rang him to look to buy it back cos he hated his current 407. He said it wasnt as smooth a drive as the 406

Uncle 2 2005 407 2.0 HDi SE - Great car. Only had it a few months before getting......

Uncle 2 2006 407 2.0 HDi Zenith - ABS sensors went costing him €500 in all to replace. Sought money back under warranty but didnt receieve due to some technicality. A few months later someone drove head on into his car and totalled it. The NCAP 5 star 407 saved his life thanks to that low placed crossbeam inside the front bumper. He was able to open the door and walk out.

I LOVE Peugeots. They are underated and in this day and age are a reliable trustworthy car when maintained correctly. People give out about FAP issues and the like. The only people who have these issues are the ones who dont realise what they need to do to prevent it happening. Sure Peugeots can go wrong but show me a car manufacturer that doesnt go wrong and I'll show you a liar.

edit: changed 4.6 to 1.6. Smart arse puggy

Mum used to have a M reg 306 1.4 XL she bought it ex demo kept it 5 years never had a problem and i used to rag it as i was 17/18 years old.
I had a 106 1.4 Rolland Garros. Owned for about a year then the heater matrix gave in and pissed on my feet so i part ex'd it in and of course my 406 V6. Owned for 2.5 years never missed a beat, just the endless annoying messages on the MFD ENGINE TEMP TO HIGH, BRAKE FLUID LOW, IGNITION FAULT. Didn't bother fixing them as the car was not ment to be a long termer. Oh yeah no air con either but i still loved the thing.

Ya, top end acceleration from 60 seems pretty good in the petrols too. The HDi is a wizard in 3rd though!!

Except in mine

There's not a huge amount of power in 5th gear between 2000 and 3000 RPM, the car seems to take quite a while to pick up speed. Once it gets to 3000 RPM it seems to find the going easier, but by that point it's running at 70 MPH anyway, so I can't legally go any faster...

Hate:

- The "jerk" I get when coming off the accelerator at low speed. I think the engine mounts are causing this.
- The fact that Peugeot spray paint isn't the same colour, so the edges of my doors are now a different shade of blue
- The fact that the Radio no longer picks up radio transmissions
- The loudness of the exhaust since the flexi and cat were replaced

Like:

- The overall look and shape of the car
- The aircon
- Reliability-wise, apart from the wrong fuel filter housing it hasn't failed to start, the suspension hasn't gone yet.
- Comfort of the seats
- The relative "anonymity", compared to a GTV which was a constant worry when parked up - will it get keyed / stolen etc. Also I would imagine it stands out less to traffic branch.
- Boot space

My eggsauce sounded a bit gruff after the new flexi was fitted - I put it down to the fact the insides were not yet coated in enough soot but that might be wishful thinking. I think is did quieten down but it may have been me getting used to it.

As cars go the 406 has been the best so far, its way better than the crappy petrol hatches i had before it, diesel torque and the great comfort and handling of the 406 is so good i generally ignore niggles but i havent had too many, they only annoy me when i cant fix them and that was only the com2000

I must say I'd always recommend a 406 to someone especially as they are surprisingly easy-going come MOT time. Tyres are cheap, eggsauces are cheap, parts are plentiful (I didn't say cheap here yet) they don't tend to rust away and are mega comfortable.

Re: What do you hate about the car?

Another thing I hate about my car is the fact that noone seems to like it after my Accord :( My brother-in-law said that the Accord was "like a limousine" compared to the 406 - I didn't dare ask what the '6 felt like :frown:

My other half also favours the Accord and so does my mother... I'll admit, it was a better looking, more modern car and inside was a more "expensive" feel to it... oh and the diesel engine pulled like a train - it really was magnificent.... when it bloody worked.

But again, what does "reliability" mean to people? If I was to say that none of my cars let me down/stranded, then I'd say all were reliable. But if I was to talk about what parts failed and how much it would cost to replace the said parts, then I'd say none of my cars were reliable, with Honda being the most expensive one to fix.

Most people would be happy driving around with a blowing exhaust or a rattly interior - simply because they don't know any better - and would call the Peugeot reliable. But if, like us, you're paranoid about every single untoward squeak or rattle, it's a different story...

Pointless rant over
