LX/GLX - What's the difference?

Post by CountryPug »

This is something that's always bugged me about the 406 D9 range. What is the difference between the LX and GLX D9's? I ask because I have an LX and its very well spec'd, obviously much better than my old GLX 405. Did anything extra come on the GLX D9's? My mum had a GLX D8 for a while and the only extra I remember it having over mine was that when you locked it with the key, if any windows were down they would put themselves up, this was very cool in a carpark :D Mondeo and Vectra owners looked on in envy

Mostly depends on the year. 1999-2000 LX only had electric front windows, no front armrests, no front fogs & a single CD player while the GLX had all this with a 6disc changer & tape head unit. From about 2000 on though, the LX ended up better equipped than the earlier GLX as it gained all this aswell as wood cappings on the doors & a trip computer. Not sure what the GLX gained at this time, but think it was just a leather steering wheel & electric drivers seat.

I have a poverty-spec LX (i.e. 1999 model). No front fogs, manual rear windows, no arm rests on the front seats, and it came with a tape player. Did have climate control AC though, which I think is what separates the LX from the lowly L.

I had thought that GLX models of the time came with front and rear electric windows and a CD player head unit, and possibly alloy wheels as standard, but that was it.

It would be interesting to see a proper comparison of features between the L, LX, GLX, GTX, Rapier, S, SE, and Executive trim levels though (please tell me if I missed one out from that list).

My 97 LX didn't have AC. I've never seen a GLX without alloys.

My 97 GLX has front fogs, leccy windows all round and digital aircon, bought her with an after market stereo and steel wheels but they could well have been sold on by a previous owner (now sporting some nice 16" coupe wheels  ).

The best feature has to be the spinny key which I believe is a safety feature to stop drink driving by making it impossible to get into the bloody car unless you are stone cold sober (must fix the remote locking one day)

Didn't know about the leccy windows auto closing, can't wait to finish work to have a try.

I have a 2002 GLX. It has:
  • alloys,
  • four electric windows,
  • walnut effect interior trim, but not on the centre console,
  • electric front seats with arm rests,
  • climate control,
  • CD stereo,
  • satellite navigation,
  • MFD with buttons on stalks and remote control,
  • front fog lights,
  • auto lights.
It does not have:
  • a CD changer,
  • an oil temperature gauge,
  • chrome surrounds on the speedo etc.,
  • red lights in the doors,
  • a leather steering wheel.
I agree it would be interesting to reverse-engineer the specification matrix. However, I expect that being French it will defy logic.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

I'd always assumed 406s were loaded with whatever was lying about the factory floor that day.

I've seen Rapiers with and without CD players, front-only and full electric windows, LXs with and without alloys, with or without leather steering wheels.

Reminds me of the stories of when the UK had a car industry, BL I think it was, word got on the floor when one of the workers had reserved a car to be built, that car was marked and ended up with all the top spec gear they could find, despite being priced on the employee purchase scheme as a base model :cheesy:

Oh yeah, my LX also had front fogs, but only cos I fittem 'em meself. Similarly people add alloys, changers, leathers and even all-round electric windows if they're particularly keen. So after 10+ years a basic spec car could have had all sorts of bits added to it.

Ah, now I see some differences. I don't have:
  • Alloys
  • Electric front seats
  • Sat nav
  • Auto Lights

Early D9 LX's had a cassette as standard, but CD player was something like only 30 notes extra. I think 2000 the Cd player became standard.

Early D9 LX's had no plastic wood trims on the doors.

IIRC alloys were an option on the early D9 LX's.

My 99 LX had the electronic aircon, though others the same age seemed to have the manual aircon.

I ain't got the slightest idea what model mine is, it's an ex-police general fleet car.
It didn't have an entertainment package of any sort fitted, not even an aerial, although funnily enough there's an aerial co-ax in my radio cubby hole. (Plus a big coil of multi-core cable which presumably used to connect all the radio's and other police extra equipment, which was all removed by the time I got it :( )

It's an X plate d9 hdi saloon, thats all I know and it's got
  • leather steering wheel
    steel wheels
    electric front windows, manual rears
    no arm-rests in the front
no air-con, just normal turn knob heating controls
wood trim in the dashboard, but not my centre console
    leather trimmed door card tops
    front fogs
Whether it's an L, LX, GLX, or a police spec special I've no idea, but I wouldn't mind knowing :)
Simon.
