Lager poured over laptop!!!!!

Post by trem1 »

Well my eldest daughters ex-boyfriend has been making a pest of himself again. His party piece this time was to pour a full can of lager over her laptop while it was switched on.As soon as he did it my daughter turned it upside down and left it overnight to drain. i.ve removed the battery and had a peep behind the keyboard to remove any remaining liquid, which to be fair was a very small amount, its been 36 hours since it happened so is it safe to charge it up and try switching it on????
Or is it more likely its completely dead and useless??
how much is it likely to cost her to repair it??? anyone got any idea
Is there anything else i can do to try and sort it ???

any advice appreciated
Neil

Depends if the lager got inside, if it gets on any electronics it's likely to corrode it and leave a sticky residue that's liable to cause short circuits.

Don't even think about charging it, in fact I hope the battery isn't in it. You should be able to whip the keyboard off and have a squint. If it got in the workings then you really need to dismantle it and clean it all up with IMS or simiar. Not fun.

No idea how much it'd cost to repair, the worst I ever did was pour coffee through a desktop keyboard

Get a hair dryer to it to make sure everything is dry.

Some of the keys may be sticky.

Ideally, as said, take it apart and dry it.

I had a Sony Vaio that the cat knocked a beer into trying to chase the mouse pointer. Dried it out by turning it over near the radiator, worked well for a while but after a couple of months the processor fan stopped spinning and the whole thing was ruined. May or may not be related to the beer ingestion.

Oh and uninstall your daughter's ex process that keeps hanging round. CTRL+ALT+DEL or a polite word in the ear

I've dropped my mobile phone into water on a couple of occassions and found the best way to dry it out was to put it in the hot press or boiler house for a couple of days. Will certainly dry it out, whether the laptop will still work is another thing :?:

You have no way of knowing until you power it up. Let it dry, if possible open it up and give all the bits a good wipe. I've encountered several laptops and towers which have been given a drink, so far not one has actually died but often one more bits need replacing. As long as there was no smoke/bang/fire when it happened, you can remain optimistic.

The corroding stuff was advice given to me about coke but I'm sure lager's just as nasty. I got that from a guy who described himself as a computer hardware technician  I do try not to talk about cars sometimes

Which reminds me (yes folks, it's boring story time again :cheesy: ) when I was a bout 14 my mum left a vase of flowers on top the telly. This would be one of those tellies on a little trolley stand thing, on wheels of course. While my folks were out once I just managed to knock it and the inevitable happened - over it went pouring the whole lot straight on the gubbins on the back of the tube. It wasn't on fortunately, but I still had to stand there for 4 hours with a hairdryer on it. I tried it after 2 but the picture was mostly red (as my arse would have been if they'd have found out I suspect). It worked perfectly until we got a new one a few years later and got donated to a cousin.

If it's had a sugar/beer solution the best course is to open it up and give it a blast with a can of brake cleaner (or similar solvent, something that doesn't leave a residue)

Else the "dried" sugar attracts dust and in time causes it to short out.

Stripping a laptop isn't a big job, it's just like any other mechanical procedure, take your time and make sure you put everything back where you found it! Be careful on the strip down as you'll find some of the cables pass through other bits of the machine and need to be undone before the layer below can be free'd up (sounds really scary but it's blindingly obvious once you see it with your own eyes)

Split the case apart & give it all a good clean with isopropyl. From the sound of it I don't reckon any beer got inside anyway :supafrisk:
You may have to replace the keyboard but you could try soaking in in isopropyl to degunk the keys... They're cheap enough on ebay anyhow.

Put it in the airing cupboard for a few days. Spray some WD40 in and around the CPU etc to dry out moisture. If you can remove the keyboard you can buy an aerosol that you can spray on keyboard and let it soak (or just use any househld kitchen/surface cleaner), then run it under a tap to clean it out. Then let keyboard dry on the radiator etc and go over it with a hairdryer, get a credit card and put some paper towel over it and put it in between all the keys to make sure theres no excess water. Spray a tiny bit of WD40 in and around the keyboard. If you can get at the motherboard clean it with some Glass cleaner (high isoproponal alcohol content)
Oh and if your looking for a new prat for you daughter I'm 17, good with computers and I hate alcohol

WD40? NO! he wants to AVOID stuff that will make the interior of the laptop sticky, not encourage it!

Not heard of a glass cleaner having IPA in it before, thought they were mainly vinegar.

As soon as I've finished my workout, I'll pop round to have a little 5 knuckle word with him for you Neil.

Any scumbag treats my daughters like that will suddenly find life very exciting, followed by life being rather painful, although my eldest is a black belt in 3 different martial arts and probably can look after herself.

Looking back, it's quite funny how she got into martial arts. She was getting bullied in Primary school, and the head teacher was doing sod all about it. I used to box light heavy and then heavy, so I hung up the old punchbag and taught her proper stance, how to block, how to punch etc. suffice to say, the little s**t only touched her once after that.

To work on her fitness, when she was naughty instead of smacking her I used to make her do 10 press ups instead. As she got fitted I slowly upped it and before long she could do 50 in a jiff, and 20 with her little sister laying on her back.

We kept the informal boxing lessons going, and one of my neighbours suggested she might like to accompany him to his Tae Kwon Do lessons. Off she went and loved it, and barring a short break for an operation on her foot, she soon zipped up to black belt and took the UK interclub championship. She's tall like her Dad, so she had to spar with the adults, and even the ladies National Technical Champion was having a hard time keeping up. I started too, and worked my way up to black tag, a semi-grade of black belt, before being run over and breaking my pelvis and having to jack it in.

In secondary school some little scumbag pulled a knife on Stephanie and she promptly took it off him and sent him off to hospital. By then she was also into Karate and Kickboxing, plus a few further infantry and police hand to hand techniques I'd picked up along the way, so she was pretty handy by then,

She went to college and had a part time job at Mcdonalds. Walking home one night a group of 3 tried to rob her. Stephanie suffered a broken jaw, but she hit the ringleader so hard she split his stomach. He ran off a few hundred yards, collapsed and the dibble picked him up in hospital.

Then in college, her friends feller start pushing her friend around. Stephanie tried to intervene and he pushed her down a flight of stairs. Shaken, but unhurt, Steph went back to him and he tried to hit her...and woke up in Hossy. The caretaker and 3 tutors had to drag her off him.

Aware that I've inadvertently created a superfit killer,I tried to get her to join the police of fire service, to do a disciplined job and keep her in check. In the end she joined the RAF and she's now a PTI beasting the living daylights out of pussy airmen and RAF regiment soldiers who think they're 'ard.

No one messes with my little girl.

I've always used a tinyh bit of WD40 around areas just to make sure all the moisture is drawn out. And Glass cleaner is mainly IPA which is why it dries so fast :)
