My thinking was that the glue doesn't necessarily have to bond to the metal - if it's all around the cup it should cling on and has the advantage that it's easy to remove and when you have you're working on a perfectly clean joint...
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Sounds like a plan. If you keep the joint perfectly clean, you will never have to touch it again.

If you have enough room, try to cut off one hexagon of the nut downward from the bolt thread.

PASSED MOT!!!!!! :D :D :D

Thanks for all your advice chaps, it's always appreciated :D

Jasper; I'd got the nut off, the shank of the ball joint was seized in the hub and would not budge. Until...

Having cut the ball joint off fairly flush last night and soaking it in wd40 I put a socket over the remnants and used a G clamp with an extension bar to prise the shank out upwards. It worked! And I raise my middle finger at corrosion and road salt!

I must admit I was chain smoking while the bloke re-tested it but all is well, thanks for lending an ear everyone 8)

Edit: Forgot to mention, I fitted the flat wiper blades this afternoon as that was another failure; just need a good downpour to test them out! (Shouldn't be long  )

Ah right! Sorry, I misunderstood, glad you got it sorted now, I face these situations daily, yesterday I took 4 hours to remove the left hand front strut on a Citroen C3 just to replace the top strut bearing, the whole bearing track had popped out causing the spring to wind up on left lock (mot fail).
I couldn't get the bottom ball joint out and because the spring had dropped down, the strut wouldn't come down far enough to pull the hub away.Should have been an hour tops to remove and replace everything.

No need to apologise jasper, I'm always grateful for any input!
I certainly don't envy your job. As a DIY mechanic the pressure is all of your own making (or SWMBO) but as a professional with customers hassling you... sod that!

Speaking of the customer...I went round to pick the car up and take it for retest this afternoon, when I got back to their house with the car and a bill I was greeted by the lady of the house telling me to go to her husbands work to see him for payment as she has nothing to do with money....GRRRRRRR. I still haven't got paid, I now have to go round tomorrow!
