Boot handle...

Post by Bailes1992 »

Just went to open my boot, pressed the button with one hand, pulled with the other and the handle snapped clean off on one side...

Can't belive it! Going to fiberglass it from the back tommorow, filler in the crack, sand it, prime it and paint it mat black tommorow.
Might also get rid of the key hole as the lock dosent work.

This happened to anyone else?

a common problem on the 306 estate as well the 406, mine is loose enough to tell its gonna break if i grab it to lift the lid,
only thing that has saved mine is seeing and knowing about my mate's who has the 306.

it does look like you are supposed to grab in the middle of the bit of plastic as there its quite strong and well fixed but the outer edges both left and right seem to only have standard poor pug pop fixings holding it on :(

The left hand side is solid. I knew the right hand side was loose so should have known better. Didn't think it would snap like that to be honest. Hopeing I can delock it too which will be cool :)

Eh? Why you need to pull on the handle? I use my fingertips to pull the catch and then lift the boot lid, not sure if you've got a problem if you need both hands (hinges seized perhaps?)

How easy is it to remove the rest of the boot pull? Is the bit that you pull to open the boot seperate to the boot pull that I've broken? How is the actual handle held on?

That looks really good young man. 8)

I'd say you've passed the test and are now competent to patch up a Focus on a regular basis, (while lamenting the lack of space, limo-like ride quality and certainty of getting there you've enjoyed up to now). :P

Not that I'm biased, my lad's got a diesel hocus-pocus. :supafrisk:
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

I hate how soft the 406 is if I'm quite honest. It's so soft it makes the car uncomftorble. Theres some roads I know are smooth as silk, but the 406 finds massive holes and craters along it! And on the motorway its quite parcial to a 'wobble' at 70-80mph which always makes me sh*t myself

thats very tidy work with the fibreglass, its better than paying the stealers about a million pounds for it, and them sending you the boot button for a citroen pluriel instead, if only i could use fibre glass properly it would be handy, the last time i did it, it was on a ford transit and it fell out, on the bumper

Sounds like this 406 has blancmange suspension

406s should have soft suspension, but not so soft as to be wallowy. At high speed they should be perfectly stable - my coupé is solid at 155mph and my old saloon was perfectly stable well over that. Sharp cornering at low speeds exposes my coupé's worn shocks, but even then it's still perfectly controllable when thrown into corners at over 100mph (as long as there's not oil on the track )
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I gather it's just worn shocks. Scares the life out of me on the motorway. It actually stops me taking it on the motorway.

Sorry mate, it looks like you've been landed with the worst (driveable) 406 in history... :(

My saloon did kind of lurch and roll into tighter corners (on its standard springs) until I fitted a strut brace over the front suspension mounts. It's like a whole new car now. I was thinking about lowering it a bit and having stiffer springs, but the car feels pretty good as it is.

If you do miss the 406 when you sell it on, and you're ever tempted back into the fold, then a coupe looks like the car to get. I am still mulling over what my next car will be (though it will likely be quite a while before I do change), and the 406 Coupe is still very high on the list.

Incidentally, and somewhat unrelated - my car will hit the 50,000 mile mark on the day I hit the 30 year mark (Friday) :)
2002 (D9) Peugeot 406 Coupe SE, 2.2 litre Petrol. Scarlet Red/Rouge Ecarlate/Rosso Scarlatto. Black Leather interior. SOLD :(
2008 (E60 LCI) BMW 525i M-Sport, 3.0 litre Petrol. Carbonschwarz Metallic. Black Dakota Leather and Myrtlewood interior.

I'm getting my Mums Focus, unsure weather I'l be able to afford to fuel it at the moment with my lead right foot an'all. But it'l be good fun.
Hopeing in the future my Uncle will give me his 406 (he said he will once he finished with it  ). It's a HDi90 Meridian in Moonstone. It's abit scruffy but it's been looked after mechanically and he drives it pretty hard. Looking to FMIC it, get a 1.9TD clutch on it (can hold more power), methanol injection and a DeCat so should be aroudn 140bhp then which I'l be very happy with :) Other than that might look at getting a V6 coupe in a few years and rebuilding it from scratch. I do like the 406's, just this ones let me down.
Around town it's not too bad but as I said before, it manages to find massive potholes everywhere? But on the motorway it scares the life out of me, so much so I get anxetity problems before I go on the motorway. But I'm fine in any other car?

Either way, I'm not going anywhere far :P

Actually what am I on about, I think I'l stay in the Ford Scene

Still dosent mean your getting rid of me :P
