CD Cleaning Disc's
I've got the standard Clarion single disc cd player in my 406 and its having what seems to be the standard problem, it keeps spitting the cd's back out at me without playing them. I'm just wondering if one of those cleaning disc's would work for cleaning the lens without me having to take the unit apart and if so does anyone know where I can get one and how much they are? Cheers.

They're not brilliant but they're better than nothing. I've seen them for a couple of quid in places like poundstretcher, failing that argos, currys etc, how about e-bay? look for "CD lens cleaner".

I've never had much joy with them but it's worth a try. If that fails you'll need to strip it to clean the lens with some alcohol (or similar) on a cotton bud. Remember, you've got nothing to loose as it's bust already.

If you do try the strip and clean method I can recommend digging around in the bathroom cabinet and using that Hi Karate aunt Edna bought you for christmas all those years ago, aftershave has a very high alcohol content and I've used it for lens cleaning a few times. Funnily enough I don't have any medical alcohol sitting around at home and I'm guessing not many people do.

it may be a good opertunity to upgrade your head unit why yours has gone faulty ...
most modern single din head units these days give much better sound quality than any standard head units using the same speaker setup

Have a look at Mastiff's how to guide in the knowledge base; shows how to get the unit out and clean the scaning eye.

Re: CD Cleaning Disc's
I had this problem for a while when I got my 406. The CD cleaning discs appeared to help, and for some reason they almost always played first time.
However I don't think the lens being dirty is the issue. I'm tempted to think it's something to do with the battery and temperature.
After a long journey, the CD player generally works first time for a few days, but then returns to it's usual patterns.
Also, my CD player works 99% of the time with the engine off, but once you start it it dies.
My solution is just to keep pressing the disc back in when it pops out, it eventually works - if it doesn't after 10-20 attempts just leave it in the player, and try again using the stick control later. Doesn't really help on short journeys, but if you've a few hundred miles on the motorway you'll eventually get to listen to your music ;)
Not really sure how helpful this is, but it's just what I've found.
