new pug estate owner

Post by collieman »

Hi all, have been a mitsubishi 4x4 faithfull for many years and i am in many clubs.......deciced to get myself something my aging collie could get into easy as my back is killing me lifting him..so parked up my old 1990 mk1 pajero for winter use just in case we get as bad a winter last year

So got myself a 2.2 hdi 406 glx estate...what a car all the toys and drives like a dream...until saturday and the first frost .it just would not start ,plenty off power in battery...so walked a mile to get my old pajero got back to car and the sun was out and had left the bonnet open...tryed it and it started..love the big car but only had it 2 weeks and was warned about pug electrics etc,,,oooh and my fuel cap open light is on...aye its shut....abs light and brake warning came on once....never came back again

So will be asking lots of questions as dont want the "TOLD YOU SO BRIGADE " to win.....great site :)

Hi there, welcome aboard :cheesy:

Ahh, the old "French electrics" chestnut  Go buy an Italian car, then you'll know what poor electrics is all about :?

Next time it fails to start see if you can hear the lift pump running (in the fuel tank, under the back seat) as this is the usual problem on HDis.

And when you're done fixing the problems you have come back and investigate shoving the particle filter in the bin & upping the power output considerabubbly :cheesy:

If you're p**sed off now, wait until the DIESEL ADDITIVE & ANTI-POLLUTION FAULT warnings start coming. Your 2.2 HDi is a brilliant engine, but it comes with this crappy FAP filter in the exhaust that you'll soon be wanting shot of.

Hi collieman & welcome 8)

Be reassured all can be resolved, the "TOLD YOU SO BRIGADE", shall not prevail!

The fuel cap open light is worked by a reed switch around the filler neck and a magent in the removable cap, (I think). Potentially this is a problem as it may upset the workings of fuel additive system associated with the particle filter.

For a good background on the system, check out the 406coupe club who have a wealth of info relating to 'our' engine as it was far more common in the coupe than 'straight' 406's

Don't be alarmed by all you read - the whole system can now be simply & cheaply removed, giving you the car it always should have been. :D

Confirmed - I had a driving experience day on Sunday, and was sitting in a Lamborghini Murcielago. It was showing a "low windscreen washer fluid level" message on its display (the bottle is full, duff sensor).

And ... in the Ferrari 360 (which they kept the engine running on from one driver to the next), we were warned not to touch the pedals as we were getting into or out of the car - apparently if you stand on the accelerator while the car is not in gear and the engine is running ... you'll blow up the engine. Stone dead.

As for the experience - the Ferrari tried to kill me (my foot kept getting stuck under the brake pedal - i.e. my foot on the accelerator pedal, unable to take my foot off the accelerator). I have broad feet.

The Lamborghini was the better car - though the gear shift is terrible - the gear lever is enclosed in a kind of metal "gate":

and shifting the lever from one gear to the next involves moving the stick into the ruts on this "gate" precisely, with no spring helping you as you get on normal stick-shift cars. Net result? I kept fluffing the gear changes, as all I heard was the gear lever smacking into the metal bits.

Point is, all cars have niggles, electrical or otherwise, regardless of cost or point of origin (remember all those madly-accelerating Toyotae that were recalled recently?) I'll post a proper message about my driving experience in the General Chat section when I get a spare 5 mins.

Welcome along, BTW :)
