Polski, if I may be so bold, how much did you pay for that poor old 406 you so clearly smashed to bits and ruined?

I kinda know someone (through work) who's just recently bought a V8 rangey which'd had a Gas conversion and its just had a fair bit of lolly spent on some head work :| - I'd be careful to check it idles correctly (on petrol and gas) and if possible do a sniffer test on the expany tank?

I think, no I know, it's an 02 reg and I think he paid sub £3K for it? if that sounds about right? tbh when he was saying about it to someone else I was thinking more about the gas and recent head work!

Aren't you supposed to start the thing up on petrol and then switch to gas? I wonder if people are a bit too swift to get it on gas before it ready?

Welly,

I paid around the 1500 quid mark with a years MOT and Tax on it,it had allegedly just had a brand new clutch too
I know i paid over the odds but the BMW was crippling me in fuel at the time so it was a quick trip out an a Saturday morning round the local used car lots, found it agreed to screen price if they T&T'd it for twelve months, picked it up the following Tuesday morning, since then have I stuck 24,000 miles on it and replaced the brake discs, lift pump and the back box, it did three trips to and from Poland and in my opinion paid for itself in fuel savings and load space alone, to get £627 back on it, well i was surprised to say the least.

As for the Range Rover propensity to do its head gaskets, i have heard about this and will be looking out for it, I need to drive the thing straight back across Europe the day after buying it so will be doing an extended test drive before i buy anything to check for things that can only be spotted when warm and given a little abuse, it will cost me a bit more as i will offer to cover a couple of gallon of fuel if i dont buy whatever it is im looking at, but hopefully a few quid on longer test drives might just stop me standing at the side of the AutoBahn looking very glum indeed.

The sensible side of me is saying i should just pick up a 300TDi discovery but I really fancy 4.6 HSE Range rover and on gas it would be as cheap if not cheaper to run than the diesel Disco.
The Tdi lumps in the Disco arent too bad on fuel but........I do like the V8

As for swapping over too quick from petrol to gas, it should be managed by an ECU on the gas system to prevent such things with a manual over-ride switch for when you want the extra Umph the Petrol gives over Gas, but if they arent set up right then thats when problems occur.

Well i will let you know what it is soon enough as Im flying tonight and have a few lined up to view from tomorrow morning.
yum yum bacon butties....... its the simple things you miss i tell you the simple things.

Sounds good to me, and a longggggggg test drive is a must!

When I bought my 406 from a car supermarket they sent me off on my own with some trade plates for a test.......I returned an hour later :cheesy:

The v8 rangie is a good machine, a friend has one on lpg and it hasnt missed a beat, it would need a straight through exhaust though because at the moment there isnt enough growl to show off that v8, but in every other way its great, its fully loaded and quite comfortable and its not even the new model its a 1999 and none of the quality issues the reviews went on about

My mate who is a 4WD nutter always has always had a dislike for the TDI Discos - reckon they are exxy to fix when something goes wrong!

What about a nice late model Shogun or Landcruiser?

Well done on the maiden voyage - thirst could be worse, if you'd gone for a Rangie we could've tracked your progress by monitoring European fuel prices.

Well here a couple of pics of my Disco,
Image
not really had that much chance to get it dirty yet but found a little track that i could have a quick test on.
Image
Image

Its a 1994 Discovery 300 Tdi ES trim,
so leather, AC (that works), full electric pack-windows, both sunroofs, mirrors, in black with privacy glass to the rear and running on nearly standard 235/70/16 road tyres with Disco alloys.
140k no service history and awful respray but mechanically the best i drove on the day,

being limited to only 1 days viewing really cuts down the choice but Im happy with it as a machine but cosmetically its a bit rough, these are all things i can tinker with and tart up, then she will be sold hopefully for a tidy profit and we start all over again at christmas with another on.

The drive across europe was done alone this time and i can say that Manchester to Warsaw in a Diesel Disco is really really really far

Looks better than I expected somehow and pretty modern, you even took the time to park it at a jaunty angle like all good off-roaders

Would you like me to send you a can of fake mud?
