Since you've gone to this much bother, wouldn't it be worth getting it diagnosed on a Lexia / PP2000 setup, (assuming you haven't already)?

If it doesn't 'think' anything is wrong, maybe you've got a dodgy ignition switch or similar and it's behaving as if you turned the key off, perhaps only momentarily?

Ask a teenager to hot-wire it for you to prove a point.

Had a similar problem with my 106, the previous owner had taken it to pug and several garages with no success. I searched about the gti forums and eventually it led me to the little plastic shrowd which the ignition barrel sits in, there was a little box of electrics, probably some sort of sensor (I never really checked) which was part of the shrowd. I ordered a new one from pug for about a tener and the car hasn't missed a beat since 8) I don't know if the 406 has a similar item but might be worth a look, be a shame to sell a car you've put so much work into over something potentially simple to fix. Chin up :)

Nope its not in that pic. I got my 406 manual out there and had a look in it. The 406 has the same part as I changed in the 106, its called the 'transponder immobiliser unit'. I can't say this will definately solve your problems but they appear to be the same problems I had with the 106 and it fixed it for me. Couldn't find any on ebay so it looks like a dealer job, one for the 106 cost me somewhere between £10-£20.
