OUTSIDE TEMP

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Actually it is. You need a new outside temperature sensor which is inside the passanger rear view mirror, behind the glass. Remove the glass, cut the wires of the sensor and just add the new one, the wires are equal so no chance fo mistake there. I currently use a 3k ohm thermistor (thermal resistor) in a pen cap containment 8) which is cheaper than candy and works well enough (not more than 1-2 degrees off ).

That's really useful to know if the reading is that accurate! I'll get mine fixed now! (Reading 43c today  )

Good tip max 8) Do you know if it's ptc or ntc?

Wikipedia wrote:Applications
* PTC thermistors can be used as current-limiting devices for circuit protection, as replacements for fuses. Current through the device causes a small amount of resistive heating. If the current is large enough to generate more heat than the device can lose to its surroundings, the device heats up, causing its resistance to increase, and therefore causing even more heating. This creates a self-reinforcing effect that drives the resistance upwards, reducing the current and voltage available to the device.

* PTC thermistors are used as timers in the degaussing coil circuit of CRT displays and televisions. When the unit is initially switched on, current flows through the thermistor and degauss coil. The coil and thermistor are intentionally sized so that the current flow will heat the thermistor to the point that the degauss coil shuts off in under a second.

* NTC thermistors are used as resistance thermometers in low-temperature measurements of the order of 10 K.

* NTC thermistors can be used as inrush-current limiting devices in power supply circuits. They present a higher resistance initially which prevents large currents from flowing at turn-on, and then heat up and become much lower resistance to allow higher current flow during normal operation. These thermistors are usually much larger than measuring type thermistors, and are purposely designed for this application.

* NTC thermistors are regularly used in automotive applications. For example, they monitor things like coolant temperature and/or oil temperature inside the engine and provide data to the ECU and, indirectly, to the dashboard. They can be also used to monitor temperature of an incubator.

Thermistors are also commonly used in modern digital thermostats and to monitor the temperature of battery packs while charging.

Thats one thing i find the mfd doesnt have to say, 'ice alert' i mean when its that cold, you have usually spent some time falling over getting to the car, then struggled to get the door open cause its froze solid, then there is the time taken to get the ice off the windscreen, you get into the car and if its got leather seats its like getting into a cold bath, turn the key and the car says 'ice alert', yip i know i have frostbite on my hands, and its like a fridge in here. its pointless but still a nice touch

Yea, but picture this. You have to travel one morning in the mountains. You get up, put your thin blouse on, it's around 10-14' C outside. You get in the car and start your trip. One hour later you are on an altitude 1640m up the mountain road making sharp turns with the heat in the car on. It's nice and warm inside but the temperatude outside can be -3 or -5 'C. What is the chance there is some thin, almost invisibleice ice on the turn? What happens when you think that the ouside temp is arround 5' C?

Quite a few times I've gotten in the car at a sensible temperature, and driven it until it's minus lots outside. The climate control in the 406 is great so the warning is very helpful. Annoying when you've just gotten in the car, but a lifesaver if conditions change when on the move

Mine did the same. As said it was the sensor in the mirror. Think it was about £13 and was easy to change. I like having the ice warning for when the temperature changes when on the move. But the beep can be a little annoying.

Anyone got the part number for this so I can order a temp sensor from Pug? Mine thinks the temperature is -6 or -7. A little pessimistic!

Thanks

Don't think it's been above freezing where I am in Northumberland since Wednesday. Had the fire going constantly so nice and toasty warm.
