Rover K series
I was offered an old rover 214 for £300 but i think this is the one with the rover engine the k series, ive read a few reviews and stuff on ar online, and honest john and it just sounds like this engine is something that will break down at any time, is this the case, i would buy the car to sell on again, but as a diesel buyer i dont knwo as much about petrols so how bad was the k series.

Re: Rover K series
I think the 2-stroke Wartburg was possibly worse, but it was close.

2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

i have had both of these wonderfull machinesdogslife wrote:I think the 2-stroke Wartburg was possibly worse, but it was close.

if the rover has decent mot and drives okay go for it.yes they had headgasket trouble but if you do all the checks you should be okay also check for rust as they didnt have much in the way of underseal.i had mine for 10 months and gave it lots of stick never serviced it did about 7000 miles in it sold it with a couple of months mot and tax for 50 quid less than i paid for it so was a happy bunny.
the wartburg was ACE
mine was a estate car think it was called knight,2stroke and made of fiberglass, bought it of a magic mushroom.bearded hippy type of bloke as it was cheap and big and i was moving.the steering sometimes went where you wanted it to go other times it felt like it wasnt connected it was also very very slow [think it was about 650cc]
but it did the job also you got lots of attention[maybe it was the smoke and the smell]
it did have one good feature that was when the tailgate was up it had some rear lights inside so at night with the tailgate up
the lights could still be seen.
but it was FUN FUN FUN and every journey was a adventure and its hard /impossible to find that nowadays in a car.
Re: Rover K series
Yeah, head gaskets, water leaks from inlet manifold, drivers electric window coming out of its slot (window regulator failing,)nothing much else really, weren't too bad.
As for the Wartburg....the very first job I helped out on as a 16 year old apprentice, 30 minutes into my job, was to help taking out the engine of a Wartburg Knight to replace the clutch
I used to love the sound of the engines, hated the gearchange and the smoke.

Re: Rover K series
on the subject of engine noises whats the best ones in the buisness i know alfas have this in the bag but there are some other cars that do make a nice note, my uncle had a chrysler voyager v6 before his previa that thing sounded good, i used to get in it just to rev it all the time the noise was amazing. Then there was my suzuki vitara 1.6 wheather it was a rattly exhaust or the engine itself it made a nice metalic v6 sound aswell
Re: Rover K series
As long as you've got a 'V' configuration engine with 6 or 8 cylinders, the best sound in the world is the one yours makes when you're throwing it round a track
Nice big Chevy V8s make the best sound from the outside when idle, but an engine singing at the top of its voice is far superior

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
Re: Rover K series
I used to love it when I drove a V8 LDV400 for work
The faces of the other delivery drivers when you sat in traffic, and get it a little rev, was priceless.
Sure they'd be going back to their bosses and asking if they could have one
Thing is, the radio was barely on, and most of the time i'd be listening to the sweet music of the V8

Re: Rover K series
At a historic support event for the Le Mans 24h a few years back, they dusted of a Peugeot 905 which made a gorgeous noise with it's 3.5 V10. Young spectator next to us said something about it being amazing, but his GF said it was, 'better than sex'
Next to that, I'd say the others are:
2). Maclaren F1 with racing exhaust / non-sequential box
3). Jaguar XJR9-LM
4). Lancia LC2

Re: Rover K series
what does the v6 hdi sound like even though its a diesel is there still that nice v6 note from it, but i think the best v6 i heard was an 80s alfa gtv6 it sounded absolutley amazing at idle when filling up, then the driver pulled away from the filling station and the music got even better

Did you follow him to the next petrol station to hear it again?

Re: Rover K series
I wish i could have but i was in a transit van filling up with derv, but that noise alone would have sold the car if it was for sale
