Missing the old girl

Post by DiscoPol »

Hello again all,

I have been off finding mud and stuff recently so havent much to post about, but today i drove past the local breakers that i sold the 406 to, and there she was up on the rack looking all forlorn.

so far they have had the engine, gearbox and running gear out, stripped the front and rear bumpers and i think they have had the eggsauce off too, now im not saying i have made a mistake with the Disco,

Im loving the higher driving position, the chunky wheels and suspension are a real boon over the crap roads out here and the interior isnt too shabby at all, leather, all electric, twin sunroofs, working AC and a factory fitted sub for the stereo but i do miss the 406.

Its not helping that i drive past the breakers every day and my old 406 is the first thing you see up on the racks (maybe its the first thing i see as it was mine) I just wish they would hurry up and finally cannibalise her completely, i think its un-necessary cruelty to leave her up there and torture me with slow and deliberate dissection of the old girl, still i can really play in the mud now and the snow is coming quicker than i could have ever imagined, its only 11 degrees here today so it wont be long now

The other thing i miss about her is the consumption, or lack of it. The disco is giving me about 31-32 mpg combined, now thats not a bad figure for a 2.3 tonne 4x4 but i do actively drive in a frugal manner and use additives to get me up there with the figures, and yesterday found a local petrol station selling Bio-diesel at 3.6 zloty a litre thats about 75p a litre at uk exchange rates so i cant complain too much, however I am finding myself at the pump at lot more than before, still that the price you pay for driving a dirty big 4x4 i spose.

well just wanted to say hi and thought i would let all the guys who said i would miss the 406 enjoy that little smug feeling of being right again.

Ah! It's in the blood now, there's no getting away from it.

There are only two possible cures:

1). Get another 406. 8)

2). Convince yourself you hated it. :supafrisk: (This may actually be possible, some people believe they like rap music).

Nice to hear from you, BTW

the problems with selling an old car, it gets missed, it just shows how good the 406 is that even though you may have had problems you still miss the car and i dont think people in their new repmobiles miss their cars when they change their cars every 3 years and dont give a toss about the old one, wheras when you own an old car or a banger a certain attachment occurs, things break and you learn how to drive the broken car, you develop a set of completely new driving skills to use the car, and learn how to live with its idiosyncracies eventually getting used to them; and thats why its hard to scrap a car.

I believe it's more a case of "I'd definitely have another 406" which is testament itself to a good car.

I've had plenty of cars and vowed never to go there again but I would have another 406 for it's familiar character.

I used to call my car a "comfy old shoe" or rather it's something you ought to renew, it looks a bit tatty here and there BUT BUT BUT it's familiar and very welcome.

Maybe the scrap yard will grant you visiting rights so you can have those special moments together again :D

Pah, kick it to the kerb

Anyway, just think of all the other 406s that will be helped by your sacrifice.

Anyway, where is everyone today? I can't believe the Brit contingent have all headed off to welcome Pope Stone Age MCMXVII. Unless you've got a projectile ready for the bugger....

Trust me guys, nobody is more surprised about my feelings towards the 406 than me,

I had no feelings of loss or grief about what was supposed to be my dream car my old E38 740 when that went  ,

but the pile of French scrap that I have to drive by every day has an almost tangible feeling of grief attached to it,
am i just getting old and sentimental?

I couldnt bare the thought of having to go there and rummage about for things anymore, its a good thing that they only do PSA stuff
steve_earwig wrote:Anyway, just think of all the other 406s that will be helped by your sacrifice.
and they will, I reckon even in the battered and tired condition I flogged her on in, she is still the best thing in the yard and better than a lot of the stuff on the road

Still its time to pull my self together,

I will just find another route to work so I don't have to endure the spectacle of W735 VCP being slowly but surely dismembered, dismantled, disassembled and demolished.

How did that crappy French car with no power and AC that never cooled my sweaty brow get to me so much?

now where's the bloody snow when I need it to cheer me up :cheesy:

The difference between a french car and italian for that matter compared to a german car is that french cars for all their faults and flaws have characters, german cars are just appliances. Even their vans are the same, the vw caddy is a functional but very boring machine, wheras somehow when i get the chance to drive a berlingo which is quite a reliable well built van i have a great time

Spot on!

I have no attachment to my Golf whatsoever, but even my old Mk.1 Laguna which I slag off at every available opportunity, I was quite attached to. French cars are nice places to be inside. They're like 1st class on one of those old InterCity trains - slow, always late and they stunk, but they were damn comfortable and had character. German cars are like German commuter trains - punctual and very functional but that's it.
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
