Airbag Light Back

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Airbag Light Back

Post by FarmerPug »

I have had the airbag light plaguing my car for the past 2 weeks (even before the bsi incident) and its not gone yet even though i have redone all the connections under the seat, and sealed them up so what else is there to look at. And i have never had my car plugged into a computer yet could this thing require being turned off that way, and can the light be permanently turned off because i dont really care if there is an airbag fault

is this the airbag ecu, the one under the centre console, i dont really care i could rip the ecu out and throw it in the bin if it kills the light but would any ecu out of any 406 do the trick or is it another dealer only affair, can a computer wipe off the problem without the need to do any work

its not too expensive but is it compatible with my car an perhaps plugging in a diagnostics thing is better?

Be aware that these come in various guises and I doubt if this one will fit yours which is probably a com2000(?). The main difference being is the connector is on the side for com2000.
The three basic types on the diesel variants are those for the D8 td, early d9 HDi and com2000 d9 Hdi, I am no expert but have gleened this from many hours poking around scrappies when I had air bag problems.
I cured mine on my early d9 HDi (for a while) by replacing the ecu with one from ebay once I was sure the part numbers matched up, no programming involved it was just plug and play.
Before I changed the ecu I done a continuity check on all the outputs to the various air bags and belt tensioners using a multimeter which eliminated the connectors under the seat.
It eventually failed again due to a corroded wire in the loom under the battery, I will post a pic when I locate the camera showing the wire. I was lucky really as I was looking for a fault with the immobiliser :? . See my other posts.

You did WHAT??? Don't test airbags with a multimeter, you're likely to end up in casualty wearing one

6545 JP BOX CDE S/G - PASSENGER AIRBAG AND DRIVERS AIR BAG AND PART TO BE CONFIGURED AND WITHOUT MULTIPLEXING SINCE RPO No. 08212 (May 1999)
6545 JQ - PASSENGER AIRBAG AND DRIVERS AIR BAG AND CONFIGURED PART AND VEHICLE IDENT NO (VIN) TO BE SPECIFIED ON ORDER AND WITHOUT MULTIPLEXING SINCE RPO No. 08212
6545 JL - PASSENGER AIRBAG AND DRIVERS AIR BAG AND PART TO BE CONFIGURED AND MULTIPLEXING ASSEMBLY
6545 JN - PASSENGER AIRBAG AND DRIVERS AIR BAG AND CONFIGURED PART AND VEHICLE IDENT NO (VIN) TO BE SPECIFIED ON ORDER AND MULTIPLEXING ASSEMBLY

That's just the ones that are probably applicable, I'd guess the multihex ones. No idea what the configured/to be configured stuff is about :?

i just want the fault to be unregistered without it actually being fixed if thats possible, other than that ill make sure i look at the right replacement unit, as a note i noticed that on the +ve terminal of the battery there is a circular clip which should have a wire going to it but there isnt

You could just disconnect the ecu, I think you'll still have to pull the bulb though as I seem to remember the light still on when I had the seats out of my D8.

I'll have a squint at my battery later, it's still tucked up in the shed now.

If only it was as simple as that, if i was to do it i would get some insulating tape behind where the airbag light thing is which would mean pulling out the speedo and splitting it but it would hide the airbag light, but thats not really too bad its the mfd saying airbag fault on it and the bleep i cant tape them up, and would pulling out the ecu kill them warnings, and then pulling out the ecu might be a bit extreme i still wouldnt mind having the drivers airbag just in case, i heard of someone who has a computer so ill take it to him

The old warhorse is back in action the n96 is fixed once more except this time nokia seems to have fixed it rather than give me a new phone but anyhow here is a few pics:
Heres the wires i have removed the connectors from basically all the ones not to do with the seat motors, some are terminal blocks, some soldered, then all insulated with black tape:

Passenger side

Then here is the airbag fault coming up on the MFD, you might say you have seen this, but its in french, i changed it to french everything looks much more interesting:

For everybody's future reference, the advice regarding removing bulbs and such forth, regarding airbag faults, will no longer be applicable soon.

I had a newsletter from VOSA a couple of days ago, and the first story is referring to annual tests

I quote
From 2012, all vehicles will be subjest to additional failure items. Car and van drivers will need to pay attention to secondary safety items such as air bags and seat belt pre-tensioner devices.
Vosa started preparing for these changes well in advance of Ministerial sign-off on 5 July and will be ready to start testing in line with the new requirements along with private garages after January 2012
