engine noise

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

engine noise

Post by pugnut »

Greetings.

Recently bought a 406 exec estate priced to take into account of an engine noise. Previous owner advised as far as he could establish, the alternator bearings were worn. Took it to a local garage who concurred with this view but wanted over four hundred nicker for the job.

Sourced an exchange unit for about £120, however, does anyone know, apart from perhaps a new belt, is there anything else worth swapping out?

Haven't changed an alternator for about 25 years and that was on a P reg (as in 1975 P reg) Mini 1000.

I assume its still a reasonably straight forward procedure?

All advice suggestions and help very gratefully received

Cheers

Welcome in Rob! :)
It's a fairly straight forward job, make sure you note the routing of the aux belt before you take it off!
Sometimes the aux belt tensioner can stiffen up, can you give us more info on your car? Year, engine, aircon?

Hi Rob & welcome 8)

If you haven't already done this job, it's worth running the engine briefly after removing the aux drive belt, just to make sure the noise has gone away.

I replaced my duff alternator with an Ebay job - not reconditioned but in working order, and it cost me 30-odd quid all in :)

Funnily enough I couldn't get any of the local sparks to buy the duff part off me... I thought someone might have given me 20 quid for it, seeing as they swap the brushes and bearings and flog them for over 100...

welcome in, hope you enjoy the exec they are a nice trim to have. The noise can be the altenator as you said but the crankshaft pulley is another one to look at for a funny noise.
